Random loop representations for quantum spin systems

Abstract

Abstract. We describe random loop models and their relations to a family of quantum spin systems on finite graphs. The family includes spin 1 2 Heisenberg models with possibly anisotropic spin interactions and certain spin 1 models with SU(2)-invariance. Quantum spin correlations are given by loop correlations. Decay of correlations is proved in 2D-like graphs, and occurrence of macroscopic loops is proved in the cubic lattice in dimensions 3 and higher. As a consequence, a magnetic long-range order is rigorously established for the spin 1 model, thus confirming the presence of a nematic phase. Dedicated to Elliott Lieb on the occasion of his eightieth birthday Contents

Existence of Néel Order in the S=1 Bilinear-Biquadratic Heisenberg Model via Random Loops

Benjamin Lees

We consider the general spin-1 SU(2) invariant Heisenberg model with a two-body interaction. A random loop model is introduced and relation to quantum spin systems is proved. Using this relation it is shown that for dimensions 3 and above Néel order occurs for a large range of values of the relative strength of the bilinear (−J 1) and biquadratic (−J 2) interaction terms. The proof uses the method of reflection positivity and infrared bounds. Links between spin correlations and loop correlations are proved.

Quantum spin correlations and random loops

Daniel Ueltschi

We review the random loop representations of Toth and Aizenman-Nachtergaele for quantum Heisenberg models. They can be combined and extended so as to include the quantum XY model and certain SU(2)-invariant spin 1 systems. We explain the calculations of correlation functions.

Critical Temperature of Heisenberg Models on Regular Trees, via Random Loops

Jakob E. Björnberg, Daniel Ueltschi

We estimate the critical temperature of a family of quantum spin systems on regular trees of large degree. The systems include the spin- $$\frac{1}{2}$$ XXZ model and the spin-1 nematic model. Our formula is conjectured to be valid for large-dimensional cubic lattices. Our method of proof uses a probabilistic representation in terms of random loops.

Quantum spin systems, probabilistic representations and phase transitions

Benjamin Lees

This thesis investigates properties of classical and quantum spin systems on lattices. These models have been widely studied due to their relevance to condensed matter physics. We identify the ground states of an antiferromagnetic RP2 model, these ground states are very dierent from the ferromagnetic model and there was some disagreement over their structure, we settle this disagreement. Correlation inequalities are proved for the spin- 1/2 XY model and the ground state of the spin-1 XY model. This provides fresh results in a topic that had been stagnant and allows the proof of some new results, for example existence of some correlation functions in the thermodynamic limit. The occurrence of nematic order at low temperature in a quantum nematic model is proved using the method of reflection positivity and infrared bounds. Previous results on this nematic order were achieved indirectly via a probabilistic representation. This result is maintained in the presence of a small antiferromagnetic interaction, this case was not previously covered. Probabilistic representations for quantum spin systems are introduced and some consequences are presented. In particular, N´eel order is proved in a bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 system at low temperature. This result extends the famous result of Dyson, Lieb and Simon [35]. Dilute spin systems are introduced and the occurrence of a phase transition at low temperature characterised by preferential occupation of the even or odd sublattice of a cubic box is proved. This result is the first of its type for such a mixed classical and quantum system. A probabilistic representation of the spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model is also presented and some consequences are proved.

QUANTUM HEISENBERG MODELS AND RANDOM LOOP REPRESENTATIONS

Daniel Ueltschi

We review random loop representations for the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg models, that are due to Toth (ferromagnet) and Aizenman-Nachtergaele (antiferromagnet). These representations can be extended to models that interpolate between the two Heisenberg models, such as the quantum XY model. We discuss the relations between long-range order of the quantum spins and the size of the loops. Finally, we describe conjectures about the joint distribution of the lengths of macroscopic loops, and of symmetry breaking.

Ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and the curious nematic phase of S=1 quantum spin systems

Daniel Ueltschi

We investigate the phase diagram of S=1 quantum spin systems with SU(2)-invariant interactions, at low temperatures and in three spatial dimensions. Symmetry breaking and the nature of extremal states can be studied using random loop representations. The latter confirm the occurrence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic transitions and the breaking of SU(3) invariance. And they reveal the peculiar nature of the nematic extremal states which minimize ∑(x)(S(x)(I))(2).
