Abstract

We consider the low-temperature limit of the long-distance asymptotic behavior of the finite-temperature density–density correlation function in the one-dimensional Bose gas derived recently in the algebraic Bethe ansatz framework. Our results confirm the predictions based on the Luttinger liquid and conformal field theory approaches. We also demonstrate that the amplitudes arising in this asymptotic expansion at low temperature coincide with the amplitudes associated with the so-called critical form factors.

Algebraic Bethe ansatz approach to the asymptotic behavior of correlation functions

N Kitanine, Karol Kajetan Kozlowski, Jean Michel Maillet +2 more

We describe a method to derive, from first principles, the long-distance asymptotic behavior of correlation functions of integrable models in the framework of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. We apply this approach to the longitudinal spin–spin correlation function of the XXZ Heisenberg spin- 1/2 chain (with magnetic field) in the disordered regime as well as to the density–density correlation function of the interacting one-dimensional Bose gas. At leading order, the results confirm the Luttinger liquid and conformal field theory predictions.

Long-distance behavior of temperature correlation functions in the one-dimensional Bose gas

Karol Kajetan Kozlowski, Jean Michel Maillet, N. A. Slavnov

We describe a Bethe ansatz-based method to derive, starting from a multiple integral representation, the long-distance asymptotic behavior at finite temperature of the density–density correlation function in the interacting one-dimensional Bose gas. We compute the correlation lengths in terms of solutions of non-linear integral equations of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz type. Finally, we establish a connection between the results obtained in our approach and the correlation lengths stemming from the quantum transfer matrix method.

Bosonizing one-dimensional cold atomic gases

Miguel A. Cazalilla

We present results for the long-distance asymptotics of correlation functions of mesoscopic one-dimensional systems with periodic and open (Dirichlet) boundary conditions, as well as at finite temperature in the thermodynamic limit. The results are obtained using Haldane's harmonic-fluid approach (also known as 'bosonization'), and are valid for both bosons and fermions, in weakly and strongly interacting regimes. The harmonic-fluid approach and the method of computing the correlation functions using conformal transformations are explained in great detail. As an application relevant to one-dimensional systems of cold atomic gases, we consider the model of bosons interacting with a zero-range potential. The Luttinger-liquid parameters are obtained from the exact solution by solving the Bethe-ansatz equations in finite-size systems. The range of applicability of the approach is discussed, and the prefactor of the one-body density matrix of bosons is fixed by finding an appropriate parametrization of the weak-coupling result. The formula thus obtained is shown to be accurate, when compared with recent diffusion Monte Carlo calculations, within less than 10%. The experimental implications of these results for Bragg scattering experiments at low and high momenta are also discussed.

One-body correlations and momentum distributions of trapped one-dimensional Bose gases at finite temperature

Attila Takács, Yicheng Zhang, Pasquale Calabrese +3 more

We introduce a general approximate method for calculating the one-body correlations and the momentum distributions of one-dimensional Bose gases at finite interaction strengths and temperatures trapped in smooth confining potentials. Our method combines asymptotic techniques for the long-distance behavior of the gas (similar to Luttinger liquid theory) with known short-distance expansions. We derive analytical results for the limiting cases of strong and weak interactions and provide a general procedure for calculating one-body correlations at any interaction strength. A step-by-step explanation of the numerical method used to compute Green's functions (needed as input to our theory) is included. We benchmark our method against exact numerical calculations and compare its predictions to recent experimental results.

A form factor approach to the asymptotic behavior of correlation functions in critical models

N Kitanine, Karol Kajetan Kozlowski, Jean Michel Maillet +2 more

We propose a form factor approach for the computation of the large distance asymptotic behavior of correlation functions in quantum critical (integrable) models. In the large distance regime we reduce the summation over all excited states to one over the particle/hole excitations lying on the Fermi surface in the thermodynamic limit. We compute these sums, over the so-called critical form factors, exactly. Thus we obtain the leading large distance behavior of each oscillating harmonic of the correlation function asymptotic expansion, including the corresponding amplitudes. Our method is applicable to a wide variety of integrable models and yields precisely the results stemming from the Luttinger liquid approach, the conformal field theory predictions and our previous analysis of the correlation functions from their multiple-integral representations. We argue that our scheme applies to a general class of non-integrable quantum critical models as well.
