Abstract

Abstract. We propose a setup capable of generating Fock states of a single mode radiation field. The scheme is based on coupling the signal field to a ring cavity through cross-Kerr phase modulation, and on conditional ON-OFF photodetection at the output cavity mode. The same setup allows to prepare selected superpositions of Fock states and entangled two-mode states. Remarkably, the detector’s quantum efficiency does not affect the reliability of the state synthesis. 1

STATE MEASUREMENT BY PHOTON FILTERING IN A RING CAVITY

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Lorenzo Maccone, Matteo G. A. Paris +1 more

We suggest a method for measuring the photon number distribution and the density matrix of a single-mode radiation field. The setup consists of a chain of active ring cavities, each fed by a strong coherent probe and coupled to the signal through cross-Kerr phase modulation. Each cavity is set at resonance by a different Fock component of the signal, so that the detection probability at the cavities output is proportional to the signal photon statistics. The off-diagonal elements of the density matrix can be evaluated by measuring the photon statistics of a set of displaced signal states. The suggested setup allows a reliable state measurement even with low quantum efficiency at detectors.

Optical Fock-state synthesizer

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Lorenzo Maccone, Matteo G. A. Paris +1 more

We suggest a tunable optical device to synthesize Fock states and their superpositions starting from a coherent source. The scheme involves an avalanche-triggering photodetector and a ring cavity coupled to a traveling wave through a cross-Kerr medium. Low quantum efficiency at the photodetector improves the synthesizing quality at the expense of reducing the synthesizing rate.

Photon-number-state generation with a single two-level atom in a cavity: a proposal

P. Domokos, M. Brune, J. M. Raimond +2 more

A single two-level atom can be used to prepare an arbitrary photon number state (Fock state) in a high Q cavity . The atom undergoes a controlled succession of interactions with two cavity modes. One of them contains a coherent field. The atom transfers photons one by one from this field to the initially empty second mode. The scheme can be extended to prepare a quantum superposition of the vacuum with a Fock state, a highly non-classical situation. We discuss the feasibility of the experiment with our present Rydberg-atom cavity QED set-up.

A scheme for the generation of the pure fock states via the two photon resonant interaction and single photon resonant interaction of two level atoms and single mode cavity field is presented. In this case,we have performed a state selective measurement on the atom.
