Abstract

ABSTRACT. We study aspects of the thermodynamics of quantum versions of spin glasses. By means of the Lie-Trotter formula for exponential sums of operators, we adapt methods used to analyze classical spin glass models to answer analogous questions about quantum models.

The thermodynamics of site-random mean-field quantum spin systems

Nick G. Duffield, Reimer Kühn

The authors provide a general scheme for the treatment of the thermodynamics of mean-field site-random quantum spin systems, including systems where bond randomness is expressed as an underlying site randomness. They use the method to find the phase structure of a mean-field Heisenberg model in a random field, and of a mean-field Heisenberg spin glass model.

Tranverse Ising Model, Glass and Quantum Annealing

Bikas K. Chakrabarti, Arnab Das

We introduce the transverse Ising model as a prototype for discussing quantum phase transition. Next we introduce Suzuki-Trotter formalism to show the correspondence between $d$-dimensional quantum system with a $(d+1)$-dimensional classical system. We then discuss transverse Ising spin glass models, namely S-K model, E-A model, and the $\pm J$ model with Ising spin in transverse field. We briefly discuss the mean field, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo results for their phase diagrams. Next we discuss the question of replica symmetry restoration in quantum spin glasses (due to tunnelling possibility through the barriers). Then we discuss the quantum annealing technique and indicate its relationship with replica symmetry restoration in quantum spin glasses. We have also breifly discussed the possibility of Quantum Annealing in context of kinetically constrained systems. Mean-field calculation for BCS superconductivity, Real-space RG calculation for one dimensional transverse Ising system, scattering amplitude calculation for tunneling through asymmetric barrier (useful for quantum kinetically constrained system) are given in the appendices.

Mean Field Theory of a Quantum Heisenberg Spin Glass

Antoine Georges, Olivier Parcollet, Subir Sachdev A

A full mean-field solution of a quantum Heisenberg spin-glass model is presented in a large- N limit. A spin-glass transition is found for all values of the spin S. The quantum critical regime associated with the quantum transition at S = 0 and the various regimes in the spin-glass phase at high spin are analyzed. The specific heat is shown to vanish linearly with temperature. In the spin-glass phase, intriguing connections between the equilibrium properties of the quantum problem and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of classical models are pointed out.

Cavity-field approach to quantum spin glasses: The Ising spin glass in a transverse field

L. De Cesare, Katarzyna Walasek, K. Walasek

The cavity-field method, recently used for classical spin glasses, is extended to study the infinite-range Ising spin-glass model in a transverse field, by means of the Trotter-Suzuki transformation. Within this approach, which relies on well-known mathematics and deals with quantities that have transparent physical significance by avoiding the replica method, the quantum version of the classical Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equation is obtained. The phase diagram of the model is also obtained and full agreement with previous replica-method results is found.

Intermittency of dynamical phases in a quantum spin glass

Vadim Smelyanskiy, Kostyantyn Kechedzhi, Sergio Boixo +2 more

Answering the question of existence of efficient quantum algorithms for NP-hard problems require deep theoretical understanding of the properties of the low-energy eigenstates and long-time coherent dynamics in quantum spin glasses. We discovered and described analytically the property of asymptotic orthogonality resulting in a new type of structure in quantum spin glass. Its eigen-spectrum is split into the alternating sequence of bands formed by quantum states of two distinct types ($x$ and $z$). Those of $z$-type are non-ergodic extended eigenstates (NEE) in the basis of $\{σ_z\}$ operators that inherit the structure of the classical spin glass with exponentially long decay times of Edwards Anderson order parameter at any finite value of transverse field $B_{\perp}$. Those of $x$-type form narrow bands of NEEs that conserve the integer-valued $x$-magnetization. Quantum evolution within a given band of each type is described by a Hamiltonian that belongs to either the ensemble of Preferred Basis Levi matrices ($z$-type) or Gaussian Orthogonal ensemble ($x$-type). We characterize the non-equilibrium dynamics using fractal dimension $D$ that depends on energy density (temperature) and plays a role of thermodynamic potential: $D=0$ in MBL phase, $0
