Abstract

A full mean-field solution of a quantum Heisenberg spin-glass model is presented in a large- N limit. A spin-glass transition is found for all values of the spin S. The quantum critical regime associated with the quantum transition at S = 0 and the various regimes in the spin-glass phase at high spin are analyzed. The specific heat is shown to vanish linearly with temperature. In the spin-glass phase, intriguing connections between the equilibrium properties of the quantum problem and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of classical models are pointed out.

Exact Numerical Solution of the Fully Connected Classical and Quantum Heisenberg Spin Glass

We present the mean field solution of the quantum and classical Heisenberg spin glasses, using the combination of a high precision numerical solution of the Parisi full replica symmetry breaking equations and a continuous time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. We characterize the spin glass order and its low-energy excitations down to zero temperature. The Heisenberg spin glass has a rougher energy landscape than its Ising analog, and exhibits a very slow temperature evolution of its dynamical properties. We extend our analysis to the doped, metallic Heisenberg spin glass, which displays unexpectedly slow spin dynamics, reflecting the proximity to the melting quantum critical point and its associated Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Planckian dynamics.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum Heisenberg spin glass

Giulio Biroli, Olivier Parcollet

We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the infinite range quantum Heisenberg spin glass model coupled to a thermal relaxation bath. The $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ spin algebra is generalized to $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ and we analyze the large-$N$ limit. The model displays a dynamical phase transition between a paramagnetic and a glassy phase. In the latter, the system remains out-of-equilibrium and displays an aging phenomenon, which we characterize using both analytical and numerical methods. In the aging regime, the quantum fluctuation-dissipation relation is violated and replaced over a very long time by its classical generalization, as in models involving simple spin algebras studied previously. We also discuss the effect of a finite coupling to the relaxation baths and their possible forms. This work completes and justifies previous studies on this model using a static approach.

Quantum Heisenberg spin glasses: Anisotropy effects and field dependence

T. K. Kopeć, G. Büttner, Klaus D. Usadel

The infinite-range quantum Heisenberg spin glass with uniaxial anisotropy (D) and coaxial external magnetic field (h) is studied by means of the thermo-field-dynamics as a substitute for the n-replica trick. Within the mean-field theory a multiplicity of spin-glass phases has been found for the spin values S=1 and S=3/2, respectively, including: longitudinal, transverse, and mixed phases. The stability of the mean-field-type solution against the action of fluctuations has been investigated and the existence of a crossover from the longitudinal-to-transverse freezing is demonstrated explicitly in the temperature-field (T-h) phase diagram for various values of the constant D.

Landau theory of quantum spin glasses of rotors and Ising spins

N. Read, Subir Sachdev A, J. Ye

We consider quantum rotors or Ising spins in a transverse field on a d-dimensional lattice, with random, frustrating, short-range, exchange interactions. The quantum dynamics are associated with a finite moment of inertia for the rotors, and with the transverse field for the Ising spins. For a suitable distribution of exchange constants, these models display spin-glass and quantum paramagnet phases and a zero-temperature (T) quantum transition between them. An earlier exact solution for the critical properties of a model with infinite-range interactions cna be reproduced by minimization of a Landau effective-action functional for the model in finite d with short-range interactions. The functional is expressed in terms of a composite spin field which is bilocal in time. The mean-field phase diagram near the T=0 critical point is mapped out as a function of T, strength of the quantum coupling, and applied fields. The spin-glass phase has replica symmetry breaking; but, as in the classical Ising spin glass, the order parameter becomes replica symmetric as T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0. Next we examine the consequences of fluctuations about the mean field for the critical properties. Above d=8, and with certain restrictions on the values of the Landau couplings, we find that the transition is controlled by a Gaussian fixed point with mean-field critical exponents. For couplings not attracted by the Gaussian fixed point above d=8, and for all physical couplings below d=8, we find runaway renormalization-group flows to strong coupling. General scaling relations that should be valid even at the strong-coupling fixed point are proposed and compared with Monte Carlo simulations.

Competition between axial and cubic anisotropies in Heisenberg spin glasses

Zbigniew Domański

An infinite-range quantum Heisenberg spin glass with uniaxial (D) and cubic (K) anisotropies is studied using the thermo-field-dynamic method. Mean-field theory phase diagrams in the temperature-anisotropy plane (T,D) for quantum spins S=2 and S=5/2 are presented for different values of K. Generally, for integer spin values and large anisotropy D a condensation into a nonmagnetic spin state occurs, accompanied by the destruction of the spin-glass order as indicated by the finite critical value ${\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{c}}$(T=0). For half-integer S and sufficiently low temperature, the spin-glass phase persists for arbitrary D and K. In both cases the presence of a cubic term induces complicated crossovers from longitudinal to transverse freezing of spins.

Critical Dynamics of a Heisenberg Spin-Glass

John Hertz, Richard A. Klemm

The spin-glass transition of a magnetic material with quenched impurities is studied with use of perturbative mode-mode coupling theory, without the use of the replica method. In mean-field theory we find that the transport coefficient $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ diverges just above the spin-glass freezing temperature ${T}_{f}$ like ${(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{f})}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}}$ for $d>4$ and ${(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{f})}^{\frac{2}{d\ensuremath{-}1}}$ for $2<d<4$.
