Average Number of Coherent Modes for Pulse Random Fields

Abstract

Some consequences of spatio-temporal symmetry for the deterministic decomposition of complex light fields into factorized components are considered. This enables to reveal interrelations between spatial and temporal coherence properties of wave. An estimation of average number of the decomposition terms is obtained in the case of statistical ensemble of light pulses.

Mutual influence of spatial and temporal fluctuations of a randomly modulated light pulse in a nonlinear medium

Viktor A Aleshkevich, G. D. Kozhoridze, А. N. Matveev

An analytic method of decoupling of physical factors is used to investigate the relationship between the temporal and spatial coherence of a randomly modulated light pulse representing a superposition of a signal and noise in a medium with a local nonlinearity. An analysis is made of the factors that influence the transformation of the spatial and temporal characteristics of a diffracted and spreading light pulse in a nonlinear medium. The relationships governing the mutual influence of the signal and noise, resulting in changes in the regular envelopes and statistical characteristics, are determined.

Coherence and mode decomposition of weak twin beams

Jan Peřina

Properties of weak spatio-spectral twin beams in paraxial approximation are analyzed using the decomposition into appropriate paired modes.Numbers of paired modes as well as numbers of modes in the signal (or idler) field in the transverse wave-vector and spectral domains are analyzed as functions of pump-beam parameters.Spatial and spectral coherence of weak twin beams is described by auto-and cross-correlation functions.Relation between the numbers of modes and coherence is discussed.

Maintenance of the coherence of a light wave on weak scattering

Yi Ding, Daomu Zhao

In the light of the perspective of statistical similarity, we examine the maintenance of the second-order coherence of a light wave on weak scattering from a random medium. Some new and nontrivial results relating to properties of the scattered field which remains the second-order coherence of the incident field are presented. By assuming that the scattered field remains the second-order coherence, we can show that all of higher order correlation functions of Fourier component of the scattering potential can reduce to the like-factorization forms with a series of constant coefficients. These coefficients furnish an efficient and direct way to describe the higher order coherence property of the scattered field. We also show that the combination of the maintenance of second- and fourth-order coherence implies the scattered field coherence to all orders. Finally, the structure feature of the random medium is also discussed when the coherence of the incident field is retained up to 2nth order, in particular, in the case of the second-order coherence. Our theory is an important contribution for understanding of spatially fully coherent scattered fields, and also gives a general and new method to discuss the variation of the coherence of the scattered field.

Influence of coherent properties of an optical field on the photocount statistics

В. Г. Астафуров, G. N. Glazov

The asymmetry of photocount statistics in respect of the spatial and temporal coherence factors is demonstrated and explained. This asymmetry appears because of the of a counter receiving a non-Poisson photoelectron flux. A statistical model of an optical field, photoelectron flux, and counting flux is used in a computer study of the dependences of the distributions and moments of the number of counts in a given time interval on the ratio of the coherence factors. An explanation of the features of these dependences is provided. A determination is made of the range of conditions in which the asymmetry is significant. In particular, the asymmetry disappears in the case of a Poisson photoelectron flux and for a very short dead time.

On a relationship between spatial coherence and temporal coherence in free fields

E. Wolf, Anthony J. Devaney, J. T. Foley

An expression is derived that describes the temporal development of the second‐order correlation function of free fields. When specialized to free fields that are stationary (at least in the wide sense), the solution provides an expression for the mutual coherence function of the field at any two points in space in terms of the mutual intensity, specified at all pairs of points. As an immediate consequence of this result, a formula is obtained that expresses the temporal coherence of the field in terms of its spatial coherence. The results confirm quantitatively certain qualitative predictions of E.C.G. Sudarshan, regarding correlation properties of statistical ensembles of free fields.

Thermal Light as a Mixture of Sets of Pulses

Agata M. Brańczyk, Aurélia Chenu, John E. Sipe

The relationship between thermal light and coherent pulses is of fundamental interest, and is also central to relating coherent optical experiments on photophysical processes to the natural occurrence of those processes in sunlight. We now know that thermal light cannot be represented as a statistical mixture of single pulses. In this paper we ask whether or not thermal light can be represented as a statistical mixture of sets of pulses. We consider thermal light in a one-dimensional waveguide, and find a convex decomposition into products of orthonormal coherent states of localized, nonmonochromatic modes.
