Abstract

The S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional pyramid lattice is studied by the numerical-diagonalization method. This lattice is obtained by the combination of the Lieb lattice and the square lattice. It is known that when interaction on the square lattice is increased from the ferrimagnetic limit of strong interaction on the Lieb lattice, this system shows gradual decrease and disappearance of spontaneous magnetization in the ground state. The present study treats the region near the case of the square-lattice antiferromagnet accompanied by isolated spins by numerical-diagonalization calculations of finite-size clusters with the maximum size of 39 sites. Our numerical results suggest the existence of a new phase with small but nonzero spontaneous magnetization between two zero-spontaneous-magnetization phases.

Collapsing Behavior of the Ferrimagnetic Ground State of the S = 1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Lieb Lattice due to Frustration

Rito Furuchi, Hiroki Nakano, Tôru Sakai

We study the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Lieb lattice accompanied by additional interactions that create frustration. The system exhibits a ferrimagnetic ground state in the absence of frustration. Further, we successfully observe a novel type of collapsing behavior of the ferrimagnetism via numerical diagonalization. The ferrimagnetic state is observed to collapse in a discontinuous manner. Furthermore, different ground states with small spontaneous magnetizations are obtained before the spontaneous magnetization finally disappears.

Phases of the spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the diamond-decorated square lattice in a magnetic field

Nils Caci, Katarína Karľová, Taras Verkholyak +3 more

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the frustrated diamond-decorated square lattice is known to feature various zero-field ground-state phases, consisting of extended monomer-dimer and dimer-tetramer ground states as well as a ferrimagnetic regime. Using a combination of analytical arguments, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exact diagonalization as well as sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations, we investigate the properties of this system and the related Lieb lattice in the presence of a finite magnetic field, addressing both the ground-state phase diagram as well as several thermodynamic properties. In addition to the zero-field ground states, we find at high magnetic field a spin-canted phase with a continuously rising magnetization for increasing magnetic field strength as well as the fully polarized paramagnetic phase. At intermediate field strength, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition line between the ferrimagnetic and the monomer-dimer regime. This first-order line extends to finite temperatures, terminating in a line of critical points that belong to the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model.

Numerical Diagonalization Study on the S = 1/2 Frustrated Three-Leg Quantum Spin Ladder Systems

Shohei Abe, Tôru Sakai, Kiyomi Okamoto +1 more

The spin ladder systems have attracted a lot of interest in the field of low-dimensional physics. It is well known that the S = 1/2 two-leg spin ladder has a spin gap, while the three-leg one has a gapless spin liquid ground state. Some spin liquid behaviors were observed in the recent experiments of some frustrated systems; the distorted triangular lattice and kagome lattice antiferromagnets etc. Thus we consider the S = 1/2 three-leg spin ladder system with the next-nearest-neighbor interaction to investigate the effect of frustration on the spin liquids. Using the exact numerical diagonalization of finite-cluster systems, we study the ground state of this system. The phase diagram with respect to some exchange interaction constants is presented. It is revealed that sufficiently large next-nearest-neighbor coupling leads to a ferrimagnetic phase, which has a frustration-induced spontaneous magnetization. In addition we find two spin liquid phases, one of which corresponds to a Néel-like spin configuration and the other a collinear spin configuration. As a result of the numerical study, we find a new phase which is different from three phases.

Spin excitation of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet with frustration: from the bounce-lattice antiferromagnet through the maple-leaf-lattice antiferromagnet to the exact-dimer system

Hiroki Nakano, Tôru Sakai

Abstract The spin- S Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional lattice is investigated for S = 1/2 and S = 1. We consider interaction at isolated dimers ( J d ) and interaction bonds that form the bounce lattice ( J b ). For J d = J b , the system is reduced to the maple-leaf-lattice antiferromagnet. We primarily conduct highly parallelized numerical diagonalization to examine the spin excitation gap above the ground state for various J b / J d cases. For S = 1/2, we report calculations for a 42-site cluster that has not been previously treated. The S = 1 case is examined for the first time for clusters up to 24 sites. Regardless of whether S = 1/2 or 1, we find that the system has a gapped nature for small J d / J b and becomes gapless at J d / J b ∼ 1.4. For S = 1, we also find that another gapped region appears between the gapless case at J d / J b ∼ 1.4 and the boundary of the exact-dimer phase.

1 The spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice: Exact diagonalization for N = 40 spins

Johannes Richter, J. Schulenburg

We present numerical exact results for the ground state and the low-lying excitations for the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on finite square lattices of up to N = 40 sites. Using finite-size extrapolation we determine the ground-state energy, the magnetic order parameters, the spin gap, the uniform susceptibility, as well as the spin-wave velocity and the spin stiffness as functions of the frustration parameter J2/J1. In agreement with the generally excepted scenario we find semiclassical magnetically ordered phases for J2 < J c1 2 and J2> J c2 2 separated by a gapful quantum paramagnetic phase. We estimate Jc1 2 ≈ 0.35J1 and J c2 2 ≈ 0.66J1. PACS codes: 75.10.Jm Quantized spin models 75.45.+j Macroscopic quantum phenomena in magnetic systems 1
