Nonadiabatic couplings and incipience of quantum chaos

Abstract

The quantization of the electronic two site system interacting with a vibration is considered by using as the integrable reference system the decoupled oscillators resulting from the adiabatic approximation. A specific Bloch projection method is applied which demonstrates how besides some regular regions in the fine structure of the spectrum and the associated eigenvectors irregularities appear when passing from the low to the high coupling case. At the same time even for strong coupling some of the regular structure of the spectrum rooted in the adiabatic potentials is kept intact justifying the classification of this situation as incipience of quantum chaos. 1 1

Mixed quantum-classical versus full quantum dynamics: Coupled quasiparticle-oscillator system

Holger Schanz, Bernd Esser

The relation between the dynamical properties of a coupled quasiparticle-oscillator system in the mixed quantum-classical and fully quantized descriptions is investigated. The system is considered as a model for applying a stepwise quantization. Features of the nonlinear dynamics in the mixed description such as the presence of a separatrix structure or regular and chaotic motion are shown to be reflected in the evolu- tion of the quantum state vector of the fully quantized system. In particular, it is demonstrated how wave packets propagate along the separatrix structure of the mixed description, and that chaotic dynamics leads to a strongly entangled quantum state vector. Special emphasis is given to viewing the system from a dyn- amical Born-Oppenheimer approximation defining integrable reference oscillators, and elucidating the role of the nonadiabatic couplings which complement this approximation into a rigorous quantization scheme.

Nature of quantum chaos in spin systems

Gerhard H. Muller

A novel concept for quantum chaos in spin systems is proposed which differs distinctively from concepts currently in use. It is argued (a) that the definition of quantum chaos cannot be based on the correspondence principle and (b) that quantum chaos is not equivalent to statistical behavior. Quantum chaos in spin systems implies the existence of a new type of spectrum consisting of excitations which do not form regular patterns with a multiparameter continuum structure in the thermodynamic limit, thus removing the constraint imposed by van Hove singularities that time-dependent correlation functions for pure quantum states cannot decay more rapidly than as powers of t. The irregular spectrum is caused by strong level repulsion resulting from the lack of a sufficient number of conservation laws in nonintegrable quantum many-body systems. The similarities and differences between quantum and classical chaos and, more generally, between quantum (non)integrability and classical (non)integrability are discussed in detail.

Quantum chaos induced by nonadiabatic coupling in wave-packet dynamics

Hisashi Higuchi, Kazuo Takatsuka

The effect of nonadiabatic coupling due to breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation on chaos is investigated. A couple of measures (indicators) that detect the extent of chaos in wave-packet dynamics on coupled potential functions are devised. Using them, we show that chaos is indeed induced by a nonadiabatic coupling in individual time-dependent wave-packet dynamics. This chaos is genuinely of quantum nature, since it arises from bifurcation and merging of a wave packet at the quasicrossing region of two coupled potential functions.

Chaos in the three-site Bose-Hubbard model: Classical versus quantum

Goran Nakerst, Masudul Haque

We consider a quantum many-body system-the Bose-Hubbard system on three sites-which has a classical limit, and which is neither strongly chaotic nor integrable but rather shows a mixture of the two types of behavior. We compare quantum measures of chaos (eigenvalue statistics and eigenvector structure) in the quantum system, with classical measures of chaos (Lyapunov exponents) in the corresponding classical system. As a function of energy and interaction strength, we demonstrate a strong overall correspondence between the two cases. In contrast to both strongly chaotic and integrable systems, the largest Lyapunov exponent is shown to be a multivalued function of energy.

QUANTUM CHAOS IN RESONANT ELECRO-MAGNETIC FIELD AND TWO-LEVEL, SYSTEMS

Toshihiko Ohno

Quantum treatment of laser chaos is very complicated because adiabatic approximation is not applicable for the unstable systems and there exist dissipation and pumping of energy which are not defined as the closed hamiltonian systems. On the other hand, for atomic systems resonantly intreacting with radiation field, it is seen that chaotic atomic motion appears in the case of strong coupling between atoms and radiation or a certain detuning of frequencies.[1] That was investigated in the frame of semiclassical theory, which is based on Maxwel1-Bloch type equations, in which no pumping is introduced. Fully quantum treatment for both atoms and field are now tried for this closed systems, according to distribution function.

Chaos in the Dicke model: quantum and semiclassical analysis

M. A. Bastarrachea-Magnani, Baldemar López-del-Carpio, Sergio Lerma-Hernández +1 more

The emergence of chaos in an atom-field system is studied employing both semiclassical and numerical quantum techniques, taking advantage of the algebraic character of the Hamiltonian. A semiclassical Hamiltonian is obtained by considering the expectation value of the quantum Hamiltonian in Glauber (for the field) and Bloch (for the atoms) coherent states. Regular and chaotic regions are identified by looking at the Poincaré sections for different energies and parameter values. An analytical expression for the semiclassical energy density of states is obtained by integrating the available phase space, which provides an exact unfolding to extract the fluctuations in the level statistics. Quantum chaos is recognized in these fluctuations, as a function of the coupling strength, for different regions in the energy spectrum, evaluating the Anderson–Darling (A–D) parameter, which distinguishes the Wigner- or Poisson-like distributions. Peres lattices play a role similar to the Poincaré section for quantum states. They are calculated employing efficient numerical solutions and are a powerful visual tool to identify individual states belonging to a regular or chaotic region, classified by utilizing the Poincaré sections and the A–D parameter. Finally, the quantum Husimi function for selected excited states is shown to have a noticeable similitude with the Poincaré sections at the same energy.
