Quantum chaos induced by nonadiabatic coupling in wave-packet dynamics

Abstract

The effect of nonadiabatic coupling due to breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation on chaos is investigated. A couple of measures (indicators) that detect the extent of chaos in wave-packet dynamics on coupled potential functions are devised. Using them, we show that chaos is indeed induced by a nonadiabatic coupling in individual time-dependent wave-packet dynamics. This chaos is genuinely of quantum nature, since it arises from bifurcation and merging of a wave packet at the quasicrossing region of two coupled potential functions.

Mixed quantum-classical versus full quantum dynamics: Coupled quasiparticle-oscillator system

Holger Schanz, Bernd Esser

The relation between the dynamical properties of a coupled quasiparticle-oscillator system in the mixed quantum-classical and fully quantized descriptions is investigated. The system is considered as a model for applying a stepwise quantization. Features of the nonlinear dynamics in the mixed description such as the presence of a separatrix structure or regular and chaotic motion are shown to be reflected in the evolu- tion of the quantum state vector of the fully quantized system. In particular, it is demonstrated how wave packets propagate along the separatrix structure of the mixed description, and that chaotic dynamics leads to a strongly entangled quantum state vector. Special emphasis is given to viewing the system from a dyn- amical Born-Oppenheimer approximation defining integrable reference oscillators, and elucidating the role of the nonadiabatic couplings which complement this approximation into a rigorous quantization scheme.

Chaos in circuit QED: decoherence, localization and nonclassicality

Jonas Larson, Duncan H J O’Dell

We study the open system dynamics of a circuit QED model operating in the ultrastrong coupling regime. If the resonator is pumped periodically in time the underlying classical system is chaotic. Indeed, the periodically driven Jaynes-Cummings model in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation resembles a Duffing oscillator which in the classical limit is a well-known example of a chaotic system. Detection of the field quadrature of the output field acts as an effective position measurement of the oscillator. We address how such detection affects the quantum chaotic evolution in this bipartite system. We differentiate between single measurement realizations and ensembles of repeated measurements. In the former case a measurement/decoherence induced localization effect is encountered, while in the latter this localization is almost completely absent. This is in marked contrast to numerous earlier works discussing the quantum-classical correspondence in measured chaotic systems. This lack of a classical correspondence under relatively strong measurement induced decoherence is attributed to the inherent quantum nature of the qubit subsystem and in particular to the quantum correlations between the qubit and the field which persist despite the decoherence.

Phase Control of Nonadiabaticity-Induced Quantum Chaos in an Optical Lattice

Jiangbin Gong, Paul W. Brumer

The qualitative nature (i.e., integrable vs chaotic) of the translational dynamics of a three-level atom in an optical lattice is shown to be controllable by varying the relative laser phase of two standing-wave lasers. Control is explained in terms of the nonadiabatic transition between optical potentials and the corresponding regular-to-chaotic transition in mixed classical-quantum dynamics. The results are of interest to both areas of coherent control and quantum chaos.

Quantum chaos in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation

R. Blümel, Bernd Esser

We show that exponential instabilities and quantum chaos occur in a system with a mixed classical-quantum description. This type of chaos is of general importance and may occur in any quantum system which divides in a natural way into a fast (quantum) and a slow (classical) subsystem.

Nonadiabatic couplings and incipience of quantum chaos

Holger Schanz, Bernd Esser

The quantization of the electronic two site system interacting with a vibration is considered by using as the integrable reference system the decoupled oscillators resulting from the adiabatic approximation. A specific Bloch projection method is applied which demonstrates how besides some regular regions in the fine structure of the spectrum and the associated eigenvectors irregularities appear when passing from the low to the high coupling case. At the same time even for strong coupling some of the regular structure of the spectrum rooted in the adiabatic potentials is kept intact justifying the classification of this situation as incipience of quantum chaos. 1 1
