Self-organization effects and light amplification of collective atomic recoil motion in a harmonic trap

Abstract

Self-organization effects related to light amplification in the collective atomic recoil laser system with the driven atoms confined in a harmonic trap are investigated further. In the dispersive parametric region, our study reveals that the spontaneously formed structures in the phase space contributes a important role to the light amplification of the probe field under the atomic motion being modified by the trap.

Self-organization of light driven atoms induced by recoil effect in a harmonic trap

Zhang Lin, Kong Hong-yan, Guojian Yang +1 more

In this paper, the collective dynamic behaviors of N two-level atoms pumped by two-mode light field in a harmonic trap are investigated. When atoms are driven by the intense pump field, the atomic oscillating modes in the trap are continually excited by the photon recoil effect, which discretely changes the atomic detuning from the pumping field. Under proper resonant conditions the weak probe field will be greatly amplified and the atomic spatial structures will be spontaneously formed in the phase space.

Light amplification through collective atomic recoil motion modified by a harmonic potential

Guo-Zhen Yang, L. Zhang, W. Shu

Light amplification in a collective atomic recoil laser with an active medium confined in an external harmonic trap is investigated. Our study confirms the possibility of a great promotion of the lasing efficiency due to the collective atomic recoil motion being modified by the trapping potential. The physical explanation of this laser behavior is given.

Light-induced Self-Organization in Cooperative Free Space Atomic Arrays

Sara Molló-Guri, Oriol Rubies-Bigorda, Raphael Holzinger +2 more

We investigate how laser-driven, cooperative dipole-dipole interactions in weakly trapped atomic arrays give rise to self-organized configurations. Starting from an analytically tractable two-emitter system, we identify the possible steady-state spatial arrangements accessible to the atoms. We then extend this analysis to larger ensembles in both linear and ring geometries. In linear chains, we demonstrate the emergence of topologically nontrivial dimerized configurations across a range of initial interatomic spacings. In ring geometries, we find that the system undergoes self-organized contraction and expansion, enabling access to length scales below those set by the trapping lattice. Our results demonstrate that collective light-matter interactions in free space can spontaneously generate modified ordered geometries, even when the emitters are initially separated by distances larger than their transition wavelength.

Light Amplification in the Collective Atomic Recoil Laser(CARL)

Guojian Yang

We present a brief description of the collective atomic recoil laser, in contrast to the ordinary laser and free-electron laser. With a numerical solution to CARL equation, we reveal the amplification mechanism in CARL. Then we study the influence of some working parameters on CARL, which contributes to our later research.

Self-Synchronization and Dissipation-Induced Threshold in Collective Atomic Recoil Lasing

C. von Cube, Sebastian Slama, Dietmar Kruse +5 more

Networks of globally coupled oscillators exhibit phase transitions from incoherent to coherent states. Atoms interacting with the counterpropagating modes of a unidirectionally pumped high-finesse ring cavity form such a globally coupled network. The coupling mechanism is provided by collective atomic recoil lasing, i.e., cooperative Bragg scattering of laser light at an atomic density grating, which is self-induced by the laser light. Under the rule of an additional friction force, the atomic ensemble is expected to undergo a phase transition to a state of synchronized atomic motion. We present the experimental investigation of this phase transition by studying the threshold behavior of this lasing process.
