Abstract

Light amplification in a collective atomic recoil laser with an active medium confined in an external harmonic trap is investigated. Our study confirms the possibility of a great promotion of the lasing efficiency due to the collective atomic recoil motion being modified by the trapping potential. The physical explanation of this laser behavior is given.

Self-organization effects and light amplification of collective atomic recoil motion in a harmonic trap

Zhang, L, Guo-Zhen Yang, Lin Xia

Self-organization effects related to light amplification in the collective atomic recoil laser system with the driven atoms confined in a harmonic trap are investigated further. In the dispersive parametric region, our study reveals that the spontaneously formed structures in the phase space contributes a important role to the light amplification of the probe field under the atomic motion being modified by the trap.

Self-organization of light driven atoms induced by recoil effect in a harmonic trap

Zhang Lin, Kong Hong-yan, Guojian Yang +1 more

In this paper, the collective dynamic behaviors of N two-level atoms pumped by two-mode light field in a harmonic trap are investigated. When atoms are driven by the intense pump field, the atomic oscillating modes in the trap are continually excited by the photon recoil effect, which discretely changes the atomic detuning from the pumping field. Under proper resonant conditions the weak probe field will be greatly amplified and the atomic spatial structures will be spontaneously formed in the phase space.

Light Amplification in the Collective Atomic Recoil Laser(CARL)

Guojian Yang

We present a brief description of the collective atomic recoil laser, in contrast to the ordinary laser and free-electron laser. With a numerical solution to CARL equation, we reveal the amplification mechanism in CARL. Then we study the influence of some working parameters on CARL, which contributes to our later research.

Collective atomic recoil lasing

Claus Zimmermann, Dietmar Kruse, C. von Cube +3 more

A cloud of ultra-cold atoms is loaded into the attractive potential of a light wave that is generated by two counter-propagating modes of a high-finesse ring resonator. The two modes are coupled by the atoms due to coherent Rayleigh scattering and generate a potential which acts back on the motion of the atoms. This feedback leads to a new frequency component and can be described in terms of the long time proposed collective atomic recoil laser (CARL). This model is investigated experimentally and extended by introducing an optical friction force acting on the atoms. This allows for steady state operation of the CARL. Furthermore, it leads to a threshold behaviour of the CARL that translates into a novel type of phase transition: while passing the threshold the initially homogeneous atomic distribution is bunched in space and velocity. With this behaviour the system turns out to acquire some of the main features of the so-called Kuramoto model which provides a very general description of a network of limit cycle oscillators.

Superradiant atomic recoil lasing with orbital-angular-momentum light

Angel T. Gisbert, N. Piovella, Gordon R. M. Robb +1 more

We analyze the collective light scattering by cold atoms in free space of a pump-laser beam possessing orbital angular momentum. We derive a set of coupled multiparticle equations for the atomic motion in which the vacuum-mode field is adiabatically eliminated. The resulting equations describe collective recoil as due to either transfer of linear momentum or orbital angular momentum. For a transverse annular atomic distribution the initial equilibrium with uniform atomic phases and no scattered field is unstable. The atoms are set in rotation and bunched in phase at different harmonics depending on the pump azimuthal index $\ensuremath{\ell}$ and on the ring radius.
