Abstract

We consider the time evolution of N bosons in the mean field regime for factorized initial data. In the limit of large N, the many body evolution can be approximated by the non-linear Hartree equation. In this paper we are interested in the fluctuations around the Hartree dynamics. We choose k self-adjoint one-particle operators O 1,…,O k on $L^{2} ({\mathbb{R}}^{3})$ , and we average their action over the N-particles. We show that, for every fixed $t \in{\mathbb{R}}$ , expectations of products of functions of the averaged observables approach, as N→∞, expectations with respect to a complex Gaussian measure, whose covariance matrix can be expressed in terms of a Bogoliubov transformation describing the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around the mean field Hartree evolution. If the operators O 1,…,O k commute, the Gaussian measure is real and positive, and we recover a "classical" multivariate central limit theorem. All our results give explicit bounds on the rate of the convergence.

A Central Limit Theorem in Many-Body Quantum Dynamics

Gérard Ben Arous, Kay Kirkpatrick, Benjamin Schlein

We study the many body quantum evolution of bosonic systems in the mean field limit. The dynamics is known to be well approximated by the Hartree equation. So far, the available results have the form of a law of large numbers. In this paper we go one step further and we show that the fluctuations around the Hartree evolution satisfy a central limit theorem. Interestingly, the variance of the limiting Gaussian distribution is determined by a time-dependent Bogoliubov transformation describing the dynamics of initial coherent states in a Fock space representation of the system.

A Large Deviation Principle in Many-Body Quantum Dynamics

Kay Kirkpatrick, Simone Rademacher, Benjamin Schlein

We consider the many-body quantum evolution of a factorized initial data, in the mean-field regime. We show that fluctuations around the limiting Hartree dynamics satisfy large deviation estimates that are consistent with central limit theorems that have been established in the last years.

Bogoliubov corrections and trace norm convergence for the Hartree dynamics

David Mitrouskas, Sören Petrat, Peter Pickl

We consider the dynamics of a large number [Formula: see text] of nonrelativistic bosons in the mean field limit for a class of interaction potentials that includes Coulomb interaction. In order to describe the fluctuations around the mean field Hartree state, we introduce an auxiliary Hamiltonian on the [Formula: see text]-particle space that is similar to the one obtained from Bogoliubov theory. We show convergence of the auxiliary time evolution to the fully interacting dynamics in the norm of the [Formula: see text]-particle space. This result allows us to prove several other results: convergence of reduced density matrices in trace norm with optimal rate, convergence in energy trace norm, and convergence to a time evolution obtained from the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian on Fock space with expected optimal rate. We thus extend and quantify several previous results, e.g., by providing the physically important convergence rates, including time-dependent external fields and singular interactions, and allowing for more general initial states, e.g., those that are expected to be ground states of interacting systems.

Effective equations for quantum dynamics

Benjamin Schlein

We report on recent results concerning the derivation of e ective evolution equations starting from many body quantum dynamics. In particular, we obtain rigorous derivations of nonlinear Hartree equations in the bosonic mean eld limit, with precise bounds on the rate of convergence. Moreover, we present a central limit theorem for the fluctuations around the Hartree dynamics.

Quantum fluctuations of many-body dynamics around the Gross–Pitaevskii equation

Cristina Caraci, Jakob Oldenburg, Benjamin Schlein

We consider the evolution of a gas of N bosons in the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii regime (in which particles are initially trapped in a volume of order one and interact through a repulsive potential with scattering length of order 1/N ). We construct a quasi-free approximation of the many-body dynamics, whose distance to the solution of the Schrödinger equation converges to zero, as N \to \infty , in the L^{2} (\mathbb{R}^{3N}) -norm. To achieve this goal, we let the Bose–Einstein condensate evolve according to a time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation. After factoring out the microscopic correlation structure, the evolution of the orthogonal excitations of the condensate is governed instead by a Bogoliubov dynamics, with a time-dependent generator quadratic in creation and annihilation operators. As an application, we show a central limit theorem for fluctuations of bounded observables around their expectation with respect to the Gross–Pitaevskii dynamics.

Failure of the mean-field Hartree approximation for a bosonic many-body system with non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

Matias Ginzburg, Simone Rademacher, Giacomo De Palma

Mean-field Hartree theory is a central tool for reducing many-body dynamics to an effective one-particle evolution. This approximation has been employed when the Hamiltonian governing the many-body dynamics is not Hermitian. Indeed, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians model particle gain/loss or the evolution of open quantum systems between consecutive quantum jumps. Furthermore, the validity of the Hartree approximation for generic non-Hermitian Hamiltonians lies at the basis of a quantum algorithm for nonlinear differential equations. In this work, we show that this approximation can fail. First, we consider the most general bosonic mean-field Hamiltonian with two-body interactions and we prove that, for non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, the Hartree equation does not capture the correct second time derivative of the one-particle marginal state at $t=0$ in the thermodynamic limit. Then, we analytically solve a model of $N$ bosonic qubits with a purely anti-Hermitian Hamiltonian, compute the limit for $N\to\infty$ of the one-particle marginal state and show that it does not agree with the solution of the non-Hermitian Hartree equation. We further show that there exists an initial condition such that the exact one-particle marginal state undergoes a finite-time transition to a mixed state, a phenomenon that is completely absent in the case of Hermitian Hamiltonians. Finally, we simulate a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with real spectrum and show that, also in this case, there are initial conditions for which the Hartree equation does not reproduce the correct one-particle marginal state in the limit $N\to\infty$. Our findings challenge the validity of the mean-field Hartree approximation for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, and call for additional conditions for the validity of the mean-field regime to model the dynamics of particle gain and loss and the open-system dynamics in bosonic many-body systems.
