DIRAC QUANTIZATION OF FREE MOTION ON CURVED SURFACES

Abstract

We give an explicit operator realization of Dirac quantization of free particle motion on a surface of codimension 1. It is shown that the Dirac recipe is ambiguous and a natural way of fixing this problem is proposed. We also introduce a modification of Dirac procedure which yields zero quantum potential. Some problems of abelian conversion quantization are pointed out. MSC codes: 81S10, 70H45, 53B50

Geometric Potential and Dirac Quantization

Dingkun Lian, Liangdong Hu, Quanhui Liu

Abstract A fundamental problem regarding the Dirac quantization of a free particle on an ( ) curved hypersurface embedded in N flat space is the impossibility to give the same form of the curvature‐induced quantum potential, the geometric potential as commonly called, as that given by the Schrödinger equation method where the particle moves in a region confined by a thin‐layer sandwiching the surface. This problem is resolved by means of a previously proposed scheme that hypothesizes a simultaneous quantization of positions, momenta, and Hamiltonian, among which the operator‐ordering‐free section is identified and is then found sufficient to lead to the expected form of geometric potential.

An Enlarged Canonical Quantization Scheme and Quantization of a Free Particle on Two-Dimensional Sphere

Zhong-Shuai 中帅 Zhang 张, Shi-Fa Xiao, Damao Xun +1 more

For a non-relativistic particle that freely moves on a curved surface, the fundamental commutation relations between positions and momenta are insufficient to uniquely determine the operator form of the momenta. With introduction of more commutation relations between positions and Hamiltonian and those between momenta and Hamiltonian, our recent sequential studies imply that the Cartesian system of coordinates is physically preferable, consistent with Dirac' observation. In present paper, we study quantization problem of the motion constrained on the two-dimensional sphere and develop a discriminant that can be used to show how the quantization within the intrinsic geometry is improper. Two kinds of parameterization of the spherical surface are explicitly invoked to investigate the quantization problem within the intrinsic geometry.

No existence of the geometric potential for a Dirac fermion on a two-dimensional curved surface of revolution

Z.Q. Yang, X. Y. Zhou, Z. Li +2 more

For a free particle that moves non-relativistically on a curved surface, there are curvature-induced quantum potentials that significantly influence the surface quantum states. However, the experimental results in topological insulators, whether curved or not, indicate no evidence of such a potential for the relativistic particles constrained on the curved surface. Within the framework of Dirac quantization scheme, we demonstrate a general result that for a Dirac fermion on a two-dimensional curved surface of revolution, no curvature-induced quantum potential is permissible.

Dirac quantization with constraints within intrinsic geometry

Paul Bracken

For motion constrained to a two-dimensional surface in three-dimensional Euclidean space, motion with respect to intrinsic geometry is quantized. The case of the helicoid is investigated here which is a minimal surface. It is shown how quantization can be carried out by including a geometrically induced potential and correction in the Hamiltonian.

Thin layer quantization in higher dimensions and codimensions

Alexey V. Golovnev

We consider the thin layer quantization with use of only the most elementary notions of differential geometry. We consider this method in higher dimensions and get an explicit formula for quantum potential. For codimension 1 surfaces the quantum potential is presented in terms of principal curvatures, and equivalence with Prokhorov quantization method is proved. It is shown that, in contrast with original da Costa method, Prokhorov quantization can be generalized directly to higher codimensions.
