Influence of transverse inhomogeneity of the radiation field and of the active medium on the dynamics of superradiance from an extended system

V.D. Laptev, N. M. Reutova, I. V. Sokolov

A study is made of the dynamics of a superradiance pulse in a transversely inhomogeneous active medium inside a tubular waveguide with dielectric walls. The problem is solved numerically in the approximation of a given field profile by expanding the radiation field in terms of the normal modes of the waveguide and the polarization and inversion of the medium in terms of basis functions dependent on the transverse coordinates. It is shown that an inhomogeneous transverse distribution of the field and of the initial inversion can suppress the appearance of oscillatory replicas (superradiant "ringing") of the main superradiance field and also can result in incomplete utilization of the energy stored in the active medium because of coherent dephasing of the polarization of the medium in different parts of a transverse cross section of the waveguide.

Formation of amplitude gratings in the medium of a CO laser subject to the field of its own multifrequency radiation

А. В. Бердышев, A K Kurnosov, Anatoly P. Napartovich

It is shown that, under conditions typical of the active medium of a continuous-flow CO laser, large-scale gain gratings play the main role in a phase-conjugation system based on degenerate four-wave mixing. The multifrequency nature of the emission spectrum of a CO laser increases the depth of modulation of the amplitude gratings as a result of two principal mechanisms: the dependence of the rate of relaxation of the function describing the distribution of molecules between vibrational levels on the number of such levels, when this function is disturbed; and the mutual influence of the emission and amplification processes involving adjacent vibrational transitions.

Dynamics of radiation generated by single-pass nonlinear amplification of noise in an optically inhomogeneous medium

Стариков Федор Алексеевич

The method of a quasioptic equation for a transverse correlation function is used in a study of single-pass amplification of radiation from a spontaneous source in an optically inhomogeneous medium which is in the form of a cylinder or a planar layer and is characterized by nonresonant losses under gain saturation conditions. Approximate analytic expressions are deduced for the power of the radiation emerging from the end and side surfaces of the active medium in the two cases of homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened lines. The angular spectra of stimulated radiation are given. The coefficient representing the refraction losses and the problems of optimal coupling out of the energy via the side surface are discussed.
