Abstract

Despite the large interest in developing mid infrared quantum photonics, an integrated source of single photons beyond 2 um is still missing. Here, we demonstrate the first mid infrared heralded single photon source based on silicon photonics.

Ultra-Wide Photon-Pair Source in the Mid-Infrared on a Silicon Chip

Lawrence M. Rosenfeld, Sabine Wollmann, Jonathan C. F. Matthews +1 more

Photon-pair sources are essential for complex and scalable quantum photonics circuits. Silicon photonics offers a scalable and low cost platform with a mature fabrication technology for realising this [1] . Recent demonstrations of photon-pair generation and quantum interference in the 2.1 µm band have paved the way towards mid-infrared integrated photon sources [2] , where many gases can be sensed with unique ‘fingerprint’ absorption lines. Producing long wavelength photons with large spectral detunings from the pump, utilising anomalous group-velocity dispersion and type-0 phase matching, is hard due to the highly dispersive nature of nanoscale silicon waveguides.

Near-ideal heralded single photons in silicon

Stefano Signorini, Massimo Borghi, Lorenzo Pavesi +3 more

Single photons for quantum computing should be pure, indistinguishable and available in a large amount on the same chip. By using pump-delayed intermodal spontaneous four wave mixing we demonstrated the first source of heralded single photons meeting all these requirements on a silicon chip.
