Abstract

We demonstrate metasurfaces consisting of meta-atoms that generate spatial-mode entangled photons with different polarization, designed through careful finite-difference time-domain simulations. Using our biphoton comb setup, these metasurfaces will enable for testing spatial-energy-time hyperentanglement.

Expanding Entanglement Using Metasurfaces

Liat Nemirovsky-Levy, Amit Kam, Mordechai Segev +1 more

We propose metasurfaces-based scheme to expand the polarization entanglement between two photons. Our approach increases the entanglement dimension, expanding the biphoton state into a hyperentangled state with polarization and OAM entanglement imprinted onto two photons.

Space-Time Quantum Metasurfaces

Wilton J. M. Kort-Kamp, Abul K. Azad, Diego A. R. Dalvit

Metasurfaces have recently entered the realm of quantum photonics, enabling manipulation of quantum light using a compact nanophotonic platform. Realizing the full potential of metasurfaces at the deepest quantum level requires the ability to tune coherent light-matter interactions continuously in space and time. Here, we introduce the concept of space-time quantum metasurfaces for arbitrary control of the spectral, spatial, and spin properties of nonclassical light using a compact photonic platform. We show that space-time quantum metasurfaces allow on-demand tailoring of entanglement among all degrees of freedom of a single photon. We also show that spatiotemporal modulation induces asymmetry at the fundamental level of quantum fluctuations, resulting in the generation of steered and vortex photon pairs out of vacuum. Space-time quantum metasurfaces have the potential to enable novel photonic functionalities, such as encoding quantum information into high-dimensional color qudits using designer modulation protocols, sculpting multispectral and multispatial modes in spontaneous emission, and generating reconfigurable hyperentanglement for high-capacity quantum communications.

Generation and Engineering of Polarization Entangled Photons from a Lithium Niobate Nonlinear Metasurface

Jinyong Ma, Jihua Zhang, Yuxin Jiang +4 more

Photon-based polarization entanglement in the form of Bell states and qutrits is an essential tool for understanding complex quantum phenomena and implementing various quantum technologies such as free-space quantum communication and quantum imaging. Polarization-entangled photons are conventionally generated in bulky nonlinear crystals through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). In this approach, the photon polarization is intrinsically defined by the nonlinear tensor of the material, restricting the versatility of the generated quantum states. The recent developments of dielectric nanostructures with sub-wavelength thickness called metasurfaces [1] enable miniaturization of quantum light sources, while dramatically enhancing the photon-pair generation and allowing the preparation of complex quantum states with spectral [2] and spatial [3] entanglement. However, optically reconfigurable generation of biphoton polarization states with metasurfaces remained unexplored.

Generation of Quantum Entanglement from a Nonlinear Metasurface and Its Application in Quantum Imaging

Jinyong Ma, Jihua Zhang, Marcus Cai +8 more

We demonstrate experimentally that a strongly enhanced generation of spatially entangled photon pairs can be achieved from metasurfaces supporting nonlocal double resonances at the signal and idler wavelengths, and reveal that multiplexed metagratings featuring different orientations allow the engineering of bi-photon polar-ization states and optically controllable generation of arbitrary polarization qutrits. Furthermore, leveraging the exceptional capabilities of the metasurface, we present a combined quantum ghost and scanning imaging protocol allowing 2D imaging with a 1D detector array.

Photon pair generation from lithium niobate metasurface with tunable spatial entanglement

Jihua Zhang, Jinyong Ma, Dragomir N. Neshev +1 more

The two-photon state with spatial entanglement is an essential resource for testing fundamental laws of quantum mechanics and various quantum applications. Its creation typically relies on spontaneous parametric downconversion in bulky nonlinear crystals where the tunability of spatial entanglement is limited. Here, we predict that ultrathin nonlinear lithium niobate metasurfaces can generate and diversely tune spatially entangled photon pairs. The spatial properties of photons including the emission pattern, rate, and degree of spatial entanglement are analyzed theoretically with the coupled mode theory and Schmidt decomposition method. We show that by leveraging the strong angular dispersion of the metasurface, the degree of spatial entanglement quantified by the Schmidt number can be decreased or increased by changing the pump laser wavelength and a Gaussian beam size. This flexibility can facilitate diverse quantum applications of entangled photon states generated from nonlinear metasurfaces.
