Abstract

Abstract The peculiarities of Ramsey resonance and its sensitivity to the light shift from an optically dense medium of cold atoms are investigated. Different composite pulse protocols for clock spectroscopy, including hyper-Ramsey, modified and generalised hyper-Ramsey schemes, are compared. Error signals change significantly due to the processes of absorption and dispersion in the atomic medium. The dependence of the position of the central fringe resonance with a residual uncompensated light shift of the atomic transition is studied with the attenuation of the radiation intensity in the medium taken into account. It is shown that using a combination of generalised hyper-Ramsey error signals allows one to suppress the sensitivity to the light shift for any length of the medium.

Generalized Hyper-Ramsey spectroscopy in an optically dense medium

К. А. Баранцев, T. Zanon-Willette, Litvinov, A. N.

In this work, the peculiarities of Ramsey resonance and its sensitivity to the light shift from an optically dense medium of cold atoms are investigated. We considered different composite pulse protocols for clock spectroscopy such as hyper-Ramsey, modified and generalized hyper-Ramsey schemes. Shapes of resonances and error signals changes significantly due to the processes of absorption and dispersion in the atomic medium. The dependence of the position of the central fringe resonance with a residual uncompensated light shift of the atomic transition is theoretically studied when taking into account the attenuation of the radiation intensity in the medium. The change in pulses area of the hyper-Ramsey protocol allows us to suppress the sensitivity of the clock resonance position to the residual light shift for a certain length of the medium. It is shown that using a combination of generalized hyper- Ramsey error signals allows us to suppress the sensitivity to the light shift for any length of the medium. Also we analyzed the effect of spontaneous decay of high atomic state on the light shift sensitivity of the composite pulses schemes.

Analysis of the light shift in the hyper-Ramsey scheme of two-level atom interrogation in an optically dense medium

К. А. Баранцев, A.N. Litvinov

Abstract The properties of the Ramsey resonance and its sensitivity to the light shift of the atomic transition frequency are investigated in the case of the hyper-Ramsey interrogation in an optically dense medium of cold atoms. The shape of the interrogating pulses varies significantly due to the processes of absorption and dispersion in the atomic medium, which leads to a distortion of the Ramsey resonance and a periodic change in the central minimum to the maximum and vice versa. The dependence of the position of the central resonance on the light shift of the atomic transition is found with the attenuation of radiation in the medium taken into account. It is shown that in a certain section of the medium this dependence becomes N-shaped.

Composite laser-pulses spectroscopy for high-accuracy optical clocks: a review of recent progress and perspectives

T. Zanon-Willette, R. Lefèvre, Rémi Metzdorff +7 more

Probing an atomic resonance without disturbing it is an ubiquitous issue in physics. This problem is critical in high-accuracy spectroscopy or for the next generation of atomic optical clocks. Ultra-high resolution frequency metrology requires sophisticated interrogation schemes and robust protocols handling pulse length errors and residual frequency detuning offsets. This review reports recent progress and perspective in such schemes, using sequences of composite laser-pulses tailored in pulse duration, frequency and phase, inspired by NMR techniques and quantum information processing. After a short presentation of Rabi technique and NMR-like composite pulses allowing efficient compensation of electromagnetic field perturbations to achieve robust population transfers, composite laser-pulses are investigated within Ramsey's method of separated oscillating fields in order to generate non-linear compensation of probe-induced frequency shifts. Laser-pulses protocols such as hyper-Ramsey, modified hyper-Ramsey, generalized hyper-Ramsey and hybrid schemes as auto-balanced Ramsey spectroscopy are reviewed. These techniques provide excellent protection against both probe induced light-shift perturbations and laser intensity variations. More sophisticated schemes generating synthetic frequency-shifts are presented. They allow to reduce or completely eliminate imperfect correction of probe-induced frequency-shifts even in presence of decoherence due to the laser line-width. Finally, two universal protocols are presented which provide complete elimination of probe-induced frequency shifts in the general case where both decoherence and relaxation dissipation effects are present by using exact analytic expressions for phase-shifts and the clock frequency detuning. These techniques might be applied to atomic, molecular and nuclear frequency metrology, Ramsey-type mass spectrometry as well as precision spectroscopy.

Ramsey signal of coherent population trapping resonance in optically dense atomic cloud

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Г. В. Волошин +1 more

This work is devoted to the Ramsey method (by means of pulsed radiation) of detection of the coherent population trapping resonance in the cold atomic cloud. We investigate the effect of an optically dense medium on the form and light shift of Ramsey resonance. The main result is to find the optimal ratio between intensities of the frequency components of radiation which suppresses the light shift for arbitrary dipole moments of atomic transitions.

Ramsey scheme for coherent population resonance detection in the optically dense medium

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Evgeniy Popov

This work is devoted to a theoretical investigation of the Ramsey method of detection of the coherent population trapping resonance in cold atomic clouds taking into account collective effects caused by finite optical depth of the considered clouds. The interaction of atoms with pulsed laser radiation is described in the formalism of density matrix by means of Maxwell-Bloch set of equations. The Ramsey signal of coherent population trapping resonance was calculated for the radiation passed through the medium and analyzed for different length of the atomic cloud. Also the population of excited level was calculated in dependence on the two-photon detuning and coordinate along the main optical axis. The light shift of sidebands and appearance of additional harmonics were discovered.
