Abstract

We report a novel scheme for photonic discrete-time quantum walks, using transverse spatial modes of photons and programmable spatial light modulators (SLM). Our scheme enables simulation of arbitrary steps, only limited by the SLM resolution.

Photonic Discrete-time Quantum Walks and Applications

Leonardo Neves, Graciana Puentes

We present a review of photonic implementations of discrete-time quantum walks (DTQW) in the spatial and temporal domains, based on spatial- and time-multiplexing techniques, respectively. Additionally, we propose a detailed novel scheme for photonic DTQW, using transverse spatial modes of single photons and programmable spatial light modulators (SLM) to manipulate them. Unlike all previous mode-multiplexed implementations, this scheme enables simulation of an arbitrary step of the walker, only limited, in principle, by the SLM resolution. We discuss current applications of such photonic DTQW architectures in quantum simulation of topological effects and the use of non-local coin operations based on two-photon hybrid entanglement.

Topology in Photonic Discrete-Time Quantum Walks: A Comprehensive Review

Graciana Puentes

We present a comprehensive review of photonic implementations of discrete-time quantum walks (DTQW) in the spatial and temporal domains. Moreover, we introduce a novel scheme for DTQWs using transverse spatial modes of single photons and programmable spatial light modulators (SLM) to manipulate them. We discuss current applications of such photonic DTQW architectures in quantum simulation of topological effects in photonic systems.

Spatial Light Modulators: A Tool for Measuring the Quantum Entanglement of Spatial Modes

Miles J. Padgett, Jonathan Leach, Barry Jack +3 more

We show that spatial light modulators (SLM) can measure optical modes with a selectivity sufficient to reveal quantum correlations. SLMs can be updated at video rates allowing rapid switching between measurement states.

Observation of quantum entanglement using spatial light modulators

Eric Yao, Sonja Franke‐Arnold, Johannes Courtial +2 more

We use spatial light modulators to observe the quantum entanglement of down-converted photon pairs. Acting as diffractive optical elements within one of the beams, they can be reconfigured in real time to set the spatial profile of the measured mode. Such configurations are highly applicable to the measurement of orbital angular momentum states or other spatial modes, such as those associated with quantum imaging.

Manipulating spatial qudit states with programmable optical devices

G. Lima, Asticio A. Vargas, L. Neves +2 more

The study of how to generate high-dimensional quantum states (qudits) is justified by the advantages that they can bring for the field of quantum information. However, to have some real practical potential for quantum communication, these states must be also of simple manipulation. Spatial qudits states, which are generated by engineering the transverse momentum of the parametric down-converted photons, have been until now considered of hard manipulation. Nevertheless, we show in this work a simple technique for modifying these states. This technique is based on the use of programmable diffractive optical devices, that can act as spatial light modulators, to define the Hilbert space of these photons instead of pre-fabricated multi-slits.
