I will discuss the notion of information that can be inferred from Zurek's theory of quantum decoherence. I will show three distinctive traits in contrast with the standard Shannon information theory, i.e. (1) the information source as a potential inherent to quantum systems. (2) Instead of reception of information, an actualization prior denition of really attainable states by the environment. (3) Instead of information transmission channel, the role of theenvironment as a selector of preferred states (possible andhighly probable) to be actualized, and as a reservoir ofunaccesible information (possible but highly improbable). It is proposed a clarication of these ideas, aiming at their applications for the understanding of living systems as quantum-like. The survival of selected information will account for the coordination and propagation of epigenetic variants that are responsible for cell dierentiation in the context of cell and environment reciprocal functional and structural coupling. In this manner a parallel between Darwinian and (Neo)-Lamarckian algorithm is discussed.

Zurek’s “quantum Darwinism” and its translation into the evolution of adaptive systems In this work I justify a scheme that favors a non-reductive integration between physical and biological approaches based on the notion of information as interpretation. I start with a discussion on the cross fertilization and feedbacks between physics and biology for it helps to explain Maxwells demon metaphor as a forerunner of a notion of information applicable to the problem of biological adaptation that is best conceived today as information gathering and using systems (IGUS) in the sense of Zurek. It is shown how IGUS by means of measurements generate informative correlations between micro-states (genotype) and macro-states (phenotype), and between macro-states (phenotype) and environment. I further examine Zureks decoherence theory dubbed “quantum Darwinism” according to which the environment eliminates most of the superpositions of quantum systems leaving only a set of preferred states, among which are chosen those that are in fact realized in the classical world. In this view IGUS are equated to non-conscious agents of quantum measurement, a posture that modifies Copenhagen interpretation without falling into the difficulties of the “many worlds” interpretation. I, thus, propose that in order to tackle the problem of biological adaptation, it would be important to understand information as IGUS’ interpretative activity thought as physical and/or biological systems that actualize an organizing potential in accordance to an “internal model” of systems environment interactions, so that they interpret physical perturbations as informative signals that orient structural adjustments to be adopted and the actions that are projected to the external milieu. To end up I show how this model may serve to account for the origin of adaptive mutations in bacteria and to formally describe developing epigenetic systems. In this way the classical debate between Lamarckian and Darwinian schools must be reframed and perhaps superseded as the new scheme of interpretation is validated with more experimental evidence. To conclude I argue that semiosis is the clue to justify the deep analogy that allows to establishing bidirectional bridges between physical and biological models of adaptive evolution. key words. Quantum Darwinism, Neo-Lamarckism, natural selection, information, IGUS, adaptation, coherence, superposition, entanglement, sign, observer, measurement, ci Copenhagen interpretation, many worlds interpretation, epigenetics.
I argue for a non-reductive integration between physical and biological approaches based on the notion of information as interpretation. Thus I outline a scheme based on Peirce’ semiosis in which the relation between environmental physical perturbations and responses (internal and external) are mediated by the “system of interpretation” that detects and interpret them as informative signals, so giving rise to structural internal accommodations and to actions that are implemented on the external environment. Therefore I argue that “systems of interpretation” can be equated to Zurek´s information gathering and using systems (IGUS) and complex adaptive systems (CAS). In order to apply these model to the problem of adaptive evolution, I examine Zurek´s theory known as “quantum Darwinism”, according to which the environment eliminates the immense majority of the super-positions of quantum systems leaving only the “preferred states”, among which are chosen those that are in fact can be realized in the classical world. To end up I justify that semiosis permits to apply quantum Darwinism to the evolution of CAS, and I argue that the debate between (Neo)-Lamarckian and Neo-Darwinian schools must be reassessed in terms more in accord with quantum physics. Finally semiosis (that is information understood as interpretation) would justify the deep analogy between quantum physical and biological models of adaptive evolution.
We apply theory of open quantum systems to modeling of epigenetic evolution. This is an attempt to unify Darwinian and Lamarckian viewpoints on evolution on the basis of a quantum-like model. The state of uncertainty of cell's epigenome is resolved to a stable and inherited epigenetic configuration. This process of evolution and stabilization is described by the quantum master equation (the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad equation). The initial state of epigenome starting interaction with a new environment is represented as a pure quantum state. It evolves to a steady state solution of the quantum master equation given by a diagonal density matrix. The latter represents the state resulting from a series of epimutations induced by the environment. We use the information interpretation of the wave function which was elaborated by C. Fuchs and A. Zeilinger.
(English) The modern understanding of physics is deeply linked with the concept of information. The revival of the study of quantum mechanics in the form of quantum information is just an example of a more general trend showing how the incorporation of ideas from information theory into the practice of physics is not simply a fertile opportunity to find new results, but it also offers a radically new understanding of what physics should be describing: emblematic of this paradigm shift is the transition from the infinite dimensional space associated to the wave functions appearing in the Schrödinger equation, to the extreme simplicity of the modern cornerstone of quantum mechanics, the qubit. A special place in this context is taken by thermodynamics: on the one hand, because it was one of the first branches of physics in which the role of information was explicitly recognised; on the other, as the formal correspondence between Shannon and Boltzmann entropy hints at a deep connection between the two. Ultimately, it almost feels like these two theories will end up coinciding, and one will speak about thermodynamics just as information theory with erasure. We are still far away from this claim, but the continuous appearance of information quantifiers in genuinely thermodynamics setting, especially when characterising the dissipation, cannot but corroborate this belief. The aim of this thesis is to move further in the identification of the two theories, by focusing on some aspects of information geometry and showing how these naturally apply to the study of thermodynamic transformations. In particular, the main object of interest is the family of quantum Fisher information metrics, thoroughly studied in the first part of the thesis. In there we prove a fact that motivates the interest in this quantity: despite the statistical setting in which it was originally formulated, it has such a deep dynamical nature that all physical evolutions can actually be defined just in terms of their behaviour with respect to the Fisher information. In the second part of the thesis, we connect this discussion to the field of thermodynamics. In this context, we show that the Fisher information metrics naturally emerge in the description of the dissipation in near-isothermal transformations, that is whenever the driving is slow enough for the system to be close to equilibrium during the whole protocol. This shows another example of what seems to be a general rule: the naturality with which structures developed in the context of statistical inference and information theory apply to the study of entropy production.
Quantum theory, as counter-intuitive as a theory can get, has turned out to make predictions of the physical world that match observations so precisely that it has been described as the most accurate physical theory ever devised. Viewing quantum entanglement, superposition and interference not as undesirable necessities but as interesting resources paved the way to the development of quantum information science. This area studies the processing, transmission and storage of information when one accounts that information is physical and subjected to the laws of nature that govern the systems it is encoded in. The development of the consequences of this idea, along with the great advances experienced in the control of individual quantum systems, has led to what is now known as the second quantum revolution, in which quantum information science has emerged as a fully-grown field. As such, ideas and tools developed within the framework of quantum information theory begin to permeate to other fields of research. This Ph.D. dissertation is devoted to the use of concepts and methods akin to the field of quantum information science in other areas of research. In the same way, it also considers how encoding information in quantum degrees of freedom may allow further development of well-established research fields and industries. This is, this thesis aims to the study of quantum information outside the field of quantum information. Four different areas are visited. A first question posed is that of the role of quantum information in quantum field theory, with a focus in the quantum vacuum. It is known that the quantum vacuum contains entanglement, but it remains unknown whether it can be accessed and exploited in experiments. We give crucial steps in this direction by studying the extraction of vacuum entanglement in realistic models of light-matter interaction, and by giving strict mathematical conditions of general applicability that must be fulfilled for extraction to be possible at all. Another field where quantum information methods can offer great insight is in that of quantum thermodynamics, where the idealizations made in macroscopic thermodynamics break down. Making use of a quintessential framework of quantum information and quantum optics, we study the cyclic operation of a microscopic heat engine composed by a single particle reciprocating between two finite-size baths, focusing on the consequences of the removal of the macroscopic idealizations. One more step down the stairs to applications in society, we analyze the impact that encoding information in quantum systems and processing it in quantum computers may have in the field of machine learning. A great desideratum in this area, largely obstructed by computational power, is that of explainable models which not only make predictions but also provide information about the decision process that triggers them. We develop an algorithm to train neural networks using explainable techniques that exploits entanglement and superposition to execute efficiently in quantum computers, in contrast with classical counterparts. Furthermore, we run it in state-of-the-art quantum computers with the aim of assessing the viability of realistic implementations. Lastly, and encompassing all the above, we explore the notion of causality in quantum mechanics from an information-theoretic point of view. While it is known since the work of John S. Bell in 1964 that, for a same causal pattern, quantum systems can generate correlations between variables that are impossible to obtain employing only classical systems, there is an important lack of tools to study complex causal effects whenever a quantum behavior is expected. We fill this gap by providing general methods for the characterization of the quantum correlations achievable in complex causal patterns. Closing the circle, we make use of these tools to find phenomena of fundamental and experimental relevance back in quantum information.
Biological systems display phenomena—particularly in enzymatic catalysis, excitonic coherence, and protein folding—that appear to exploit selective stabilisation of microstates beyond what standard quantum mechanics typically predicts for warm, noisy environments. We propose that these deviations can be interpreted as signatures of an informational reservoir: a hidden, aperiodic layer of structured information accessible only to sufficiently complex biological systems. Standard quantum mechanics then emerges as a limiting, coarse‑grained description in which the reservoir term vanishes. The proposed reservoir is not reducible to any finite set of underlying parameters; instead, it functions as a high‑complexity information landscape that can be “read” only by finely organised biomolecular architectures. We outline empirically testable predictions and discuss implications for biological stability, functional directionality, and the physical foundations of living systems.
