Physical layer security in wireless-powered networks with untrusted relays

Ying Cai, Chao Zhang

In this paper, we study the secrecy performance of a wirelessly powered relay-aided system, where a pair of legal users (source-destination) communicate in the presence of multiple untrusted relays. All of the nodes mentioned above are energy constrained and powered by a dedicated power beacon (PB). To prevent the untrusted relays from intercepting the source message and to achieve positive secrecy rate, the destination-based cooperative jamming technique is employed. Besides, the optimal time allocation coefficient to maximize the secrecy throughput and the optimal transmit power of PB to maximize the secrecy energy efficiency are addressed. Specifically, three relay selection schemes with various requirements for channel state information (CSI), i.e., random relay selection, partial relay selection and optimal relay selection are also proposed to enhance the system security further. Finally, simulation results indicate the cooperative jamming technique indeed achieve positive secrecy rate and the proposed optimization strategies can improve the system performance.

Optimal Power Allocation by Imperfect Hardware Analysis in Untrusted Relaying Networks

Ali Kuhestani, Abbas Mohammadi, Kai‐Kit Wong +3 more

By taking a variety of realistic hardware imperfections into consideration, we propose an optimal power allocation (OPA) strategy to maximize the instantaneous secrecy rate of a cooperative wireless network comprised of a source, a destination, and an untrusted amplify-and-forward relay. We assume that either the source or the destination is equipped with a large-scale multiple antennas' system, while the rest are equipped with a single antenna. To prevent the untrusted relay from intercepting the source message, the destination sends an intended jamming noise to the relay, which is referred to as destination-based cooperative jamming. Given this system model, novel closed-form expressions are presented in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime for the ergodic secrecy rate and the secrecy outage probability. We further improve the secrecy performance of the system by optimizing the associated hardware design. The results reveal that by beneficially distributing the tolerable hardware imperfections across the transmission and reception radio-frequency front ends of each node, the system's secrecy rate may be improved. The engineering insight is that equally sharing the total imperfections at the relay between the transmitter and the receiver provides the best secrecy performance. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed OPA together with the most appropriate hardware design significantly increases the secrecy rate.

Joint optimization of beamforming and power allocation for DAJ-based untrusted relay networks

Rugui Yao, Yanan Lu, Tamer Mekkawy +2 more

Destination-assisted jamming (DAJ) is usually used to protect confidential information against untrusted relays and eavesdroppers in wireless networks. In this paper, a DAJ-based untrusted relay network with multiple antennas installed is presented. To increase the secrecy, a joint optimization of beamforming and power allocation at the source and destination is studied. A matched-filter precoder is introduced to maximize the cooperative jamming signal by directing cooperative jamming signals toward untrusted relays. Then, based on generalized singular-value decomposition (GSVD), a novel transmitted precoder for confidential signals is devised to align the signal into the subspace corresponding to the confidential transmission channel. To decouple the precoder design and optimal power allocation, an iterative algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the above parameters. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Compared with other schemes, the proposed scheme shows significant improvement in terms of security performance.
