A single-photon source for quantum networking

Jerome Dilley, Dilley, Jerome Alexander Martin

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) with single atoms and single photons provides a promising route toward scalable quantum information processing (QIP) and computing. A strongly coupled atom-cavity system should act as a universal quantum interface, allowing the generation and storage of quantum information. This thesis describes the realisation of an atom-cavity system used for the production and manipulation of single photons. These photons are shown to exhibit strong sub-Poissonian statistics and indistinguishability, both prerequisites for their use in realistic quantum systems. Further, the ability to control the temporal shape and internal phase of the photons, as they are generated in the cavity, is demonstrated. This high degree of control presents a novel mechanism enabling the creation of arbitrary photonic quantum bits.

Scalable multiphoton generation from cavity-synchronized single-photon sources

Ming Li, Juan José García‐Ripoll, Tomás Ramos

We propose an efficient, scalable, and deterministic scheme to generate multiple indistinguishable photons over independent channels, on demand. Our design relies on multiple single-photon sources, each coupled to a waveguide, all interacting with a common cavity mode. The cavity synchronizes and triggers the simultaneous emission of one photon by each source, which are collected by the waveguides. In a state-of-the-art circuit QED implementation, this scheme supports the creation of single photons with 99 % purity, indistinguishability, and efficiency at rates of ∼ MHz . We also discuss conditions to produce up to 100 photons simultaneously with generation rates of hundreds of kHz. This is orders of magnitude more efficient than previous demultiplexed sources for boson sampling and enables the realization of deterministic multiphoton sources and scalable quantum information processing with photons. Phase-engineered single-photon quantum router and chiral scattering in waveguide-coupled cavity-QED system

Liming Yang, Z H Zhu, Yi‐Qi Zhang +1 more

Abstract We present a theoretical study of controlled single-photon routing in a cavity-quantum electrodynamics system coupled to dual waveguides, where each cavity embedding with a two-level atom mediates photon transport between two channels. The proposed system achieves enhanced routing performance through tailored phase-dependent cavity–waveguide couplings that generate optimized quantum interference patterns. Using a real-space formalism, we derive analytical expressions for single-photon scattering amplitudes and identify optimal conditions for maximum routing efficiency. Our analysis shows that targeted routing with near-unity efficiency can be realized by precisely manipulating both the accumulated phase and differential phase shift, while the atom–cavity coupling strength enables frequency-selective tunability. Furthermore, we demonstrate engineered nonreciprocal transmission and chiral scattering, enabling deterministic control over photonic propagation direction. This phase-tunable protocol establishes a scalable platform for quantum network implementation and enables novel functionalities in photonic quantum information processing.
