Pair-absorption-pumped barium laser

R. W. Falcone, G. Zdasiuk

This is the first reported demonstration of the use of pair-absorption transitions for optically pumping lasers. In a mixture of barium and thallium metal vapors, single-photon absorption of 3867-A laser light caused simultaneous excitation of colliding ground-state atoms to the Ba(6s6p 1P1(o)) and Tl(6p 2P(3/2)(o)) excited states. Excited-state densities of about 10(14) cm(-3) were created, and subsequent laser emission on the Ba(6s6p 1PI(o)) - Ba(6s5d 1D2) atomic transition at 1.5 microm was observed.

Efficient operation of an atomic thallium photodissociation laser at 535.0 nm

D. A. Scott, James A. Piper

Results of experiments investigating the influence of resonance radiation trapping on the power and efficiency of the atomic thallium photodissociation laser are reported. Transverse pumping of a thallium iodide cell with added free metallic thallium has enabled conversion efficiencies from the ArF laser pump beam of greater than 7% to be achieved on a single Tl laser transition at λ 535.0 nm. Collisional deexcitation of the 72S1/2 upper laser level imposes a limit on the TlI densities which can be employed.

Temperature dependence of the absorption saturation relaxation time in light- and heavy-ion-irradiated bulk GaAs

Juliette Mangeney, Nikolai M. Stelmakh, F. Aniel +2 more

The absorption saturation relaxation time in light- and heavy-ion-irradiated GaAs saturable absorbers has been measured as a function of the temperature in the range from 7 to 300 K. For both types of samples, the relaxation time is shorter than 4 ps at 7 K. A regular increase of this time with temperature is observed for light-ion-irradiated samples, a value of 9.5 ps being reached at room temperature. In contrast, an almost temperature-independent relaxation time is found for heavy-ion-irradiated samples. The results are interpreted on the basis of a simplified relaxation model accounting for capture and emission from defect levels. We suggest that light-ion irradiation creates shallow centers whereas heavy-ion irradiation creates deep centers.
