Probing the dynamics of an open quantum system via a single qubit

Abstract

Abstract We investigate strategies to monitor the dynamics and determine the characteristics of a dissipative harmonic oscillator coupled to a finite temperature heat bath. For this purpose we use a single qubit coupled via dephasing to the oscillator. The whole system is described by a quantum master equation, which can be solved analytically. The solution is surprisingly simple and allows one to read off all relevant parameters from the behavior of the qubit coherence as a function of time. Analyzing the qubit coherence for a short time, turns out to be sufficient to predict the complete dynamics of the oscillator, including its asymptotic state at thermal equilibrium.

Monitoring the dynamics of an open quantum system via a single qubit

Pablo Carlos López Vázquez, T. Gorin

We investigate the possibility to monitor the dynamics of an open quantum system with the help of a small probe system, coupled via dephasing coupling to the open system of interest. As an example, we consider a dissipative harmonic oscillator and a single qubit as probe system. Qubit plus oscillator are described by a finite temperature quantum master equation, where the dynamics of the whole system can be obtained analytically. We find that the short time behavior of the reduced qubit state (its coherence) provides exhaustive information on the dissipative dynamics of the oscillator. Observing this coherence for two initial states with different out-of-equilibrium temperatures, one can determine all coupling constants and the equilibrium temperature fixed by the external heat bath. In addition, the dephasing coupling to the qubit probe, may be considered as a perturbation of the dissipative oscillator. The corresponding quantum fidelity can be calculated analytically, also. Hence, we find the precise relation between the behavior of the reduced qubit state (its coherence) and that fidelity.

Dynamics of decoherence without dissipation in a squeezed thermal bath

Subhashish Banerjee, Rupamanjari Ghosh

We study a generic open quantum system where the coupling between the system and its environment is of an energy-preserving quantum nondemolition (QND) type. We obtain the general master equation for the evolution of such a system under the influence of a squeezed thermal bath of harmonic oscillators. From the master equation it can be seen explicitly that the process involves decoherence or dephasing without any dissipation of energy. We work out the decoherence-causing term in the high- and zero-temperature limits and check that they match with known results for the case of a thermal bath. The decay of the coherence is quantified as well by the dynamics of the linear entropy of the system under various environmental conditions. We make a comparison of the quantum statistical properties between QND and dissipative types of evolution using a two-level atomic system and a harmonic oscillator.

Qubit-oscillator relationships in the open quantum Rabi model: the role of dissipation

G. Di Bello, Loris Maria Cangemi, V. Cataudella +3 more

Abstract Using a dissipative quantum Rabi model, we study the dynamics of a slow qubit coupled to a fast quantum harmonic oscillator interacting with a bosonic bath from weak to strong and ultra-strong coupling regimes. Solving the quantum Heisenberg equations of motion, perturbative in the internal coupling between qubit and oscillator, we derive functional relationships directly linking the qubit coordinates in the Bloch sphere to oscillator observables. We then perform accurate time-dependent Matrix Product State simulations and compare our results both with the analytical solutions of the Heisenberg equations of motion, and with numerical solutions of a Lindblad master equation, perturbative in the external coupling between oscillator and environment. Indeed, we show that, up to the strong coupling regime, the qubit state accurately fulfils the derived functional relationships. We analyse in detail the case of a qubit starting with generic coordinates on the Bloch sphere of which we evaluate the three components of the Bloch vector through the averages of oscillator observables. Interestingly, a weak to intermediate oscillator coupling to the bath is able to simplify the Bloch vector evaluation since qubit-oscillator relationships are more immediate. Moreover, by monitoring the qubit fidelity with respect to free limit, we find the parameter regime where the combined effect of internal and external couplings is able to hinder the reliable evaluation of the qubit Bloch vector. Finally, in the ultra-strong coupling regime, non-Markovian effects become robust and the dynamics of qubit and oscillator are inextricably entangled making the qubit Bloch vector evaluation difficult. An Exact Markovian Decoherence Dynamics of Two Interacting Harmonic Oscillators Coupled to a Bosonic Heat Bath

Gábor Homa, Dávid Hamar, József Zsolt Bernád +2 more

Abstract We present an exact analytical solution of the Hu–Paz–Zhang master equation in a precise Markovian limit for a system of two harmonically coupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a common thermal bath of harmonic oscillators. The thermal bath is initially considered to be at arbitrary temperatures and characterized by an Ohmic Lorentz–Drude spectral density. In the examined system, couplings between the two harmonic oscillators and the environment ensure a complete decoupling of the center-of-mass and relative degrees of freedom, resulting in undamped dynamics in the relative coordinate. The exact time evolution is used to analyze the system’s entanglement dynamics, quantified through logarithmic negativity and quantum mutual information, while ensuring the positivity of the density operator to confirm the physical validity of the results. We demonstrate that, under certain parameter regimes and initial conditions, the asymptotic dynamics can give rise to periodic entanglement-disentanglement behavior. Furthermore, numerical simulations reveal that for negative values of the direct coupling between the oscillators, which are sufficiently close to a critical lower bound beyond which the system becomes unstable, the system can maintain entanglement across a broad temperature range and for arbitrarily long durations.

Analytic solutions to various dissipation models of the simple and driven quantum harmonic oscillator

Pablo Carlos López Vázquez, Roberto Santos Silva

We obtain analytic solutions to various models of dissipation of the quantum harmonic oscillator, employing a simple method in the Wigner function Fourier transform description of the system; and study as an exemplification, the driven open quantum harmonic oscillator. The environmental models we use are based on optical master equations for the zero and finite temperature bath and whose open dynamics are described by a Lindblad master equation, and also we use the Caldeira-Leggett model for the high temperature limit, in the the under damped an the over damped case. Under the Wigner Fourier transform or chord function as it has been called, it becomes particularly simple to solve the dynamics of the open oscillator in the sense that the dynamics of the system are reduced to the application of an evolution matrix related to the damped motion of the oscillator.

Thermodynamics of a qubit undergoing dephasing

Stefano Marcantoni

The thermodynamics of a qubit undergoing dephasing due to the coupling with the external environment is discussed. First of all, we assume the dynamics of the system to be described by a master equation in Lindblad form. In this framework, we review a standard formulation of the first and second law of thermodynamics that has been known in literature for a long time. After that, we explicitly model the environment with a set of quantum harmonic oscillators choosing the interaction such that the global dynamics of system and bath is analytically solvable and the Lindblad master equation is recovered in the weak-coupling limit. In this generalized setting, we can show that the correlations between system and bath play a fundamental role in the heat exchange. Moreover, the internal entropy production of the qubit is proven to be positive for arbitrary coupling strength.
