Abstract

We obtain analytic solutions to various models of dissipation of the quantum harmonic oscillator, employing a simple method in the Wigner function Fourier transform description of the system; and study as an exemplification, the driven open quantum harmonic oscillator. The environmental models we use are based on optical master equations for the zero and finite temperature bath and whose open dynamics are described by a Lindblad master equation, and also we use the Caldeira-Leggett model for the high temperature limit, in the the under damped an the over damped case. Under the Wigner Fourier transform or chord function as it has been called, it becomes particularly simple to solve the dynamics of the open oscillator in the sense that the dynamics of the system are reduced to the application of an evolution matrix related to the damped motion of the oscillator.

The harmonic oscillator with dissipation within the theory of open quantum systems

Аурелиан Исар

Time evolution of the expectation values of various dynamical operators of the harmonic oscillator with dissipation is analitically obtained within the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems. We deduce the density matrix of the damped harmonic oscillator from the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the coherent state representation, obtained from the master equation for the density operator. The Fokker-Planck equation for the Wigner distribution function, subject to either the Gaussian type or the $δ$-function type of initial conditions, is also solved by using the Wang-Uhlenbeck method. The obtained Wigner functions are two-dimensional Gaussians with different widths.

Driving a dissipative quantum oscillator

Pablo Carlos López Vázquez

The open driven quantum harmonic oscillator is studied for three different possible mechanisms of driving; a generalization of the forced oscillator, driving due to a time-dependent coupling to a two-level system, and driving due to an adiabatic modulation of the frequency. The first case encompasses all possible configurations going from the standard forced harmonic oscillator to the classical pumping type of driving typically used in quantum optics. In the second case, an additional two-level system, coupled to the oscillator at a time-varying rate, is assumed and the reduced dynamics of the oscillator and the qubit is examined. In the driving due to adiabatic modulation, the dynamics of a harmonic oscillator whose frequency slowly varies in time is studied. The study done in this paper is focused on a harmonic type of driving, although the solutions are derived for an arbitrary type of driving. In all the cases, the oscillator is assumed to be in contact with a zero- or finite-temperature environment, which provides dissipation to the system. The treatment done in this paper is fully analytic and the derivation of the solutions is based on the employment of the double Fourier transform of the Wigner function.

Solutions to linear dissipative quantum systems

Pablo Carlos López Vázquez, Roberto Santos-Silva, Andrés García

We use the characteristic function of the Wigner function (its double Fourier transform) to give solution to any generic open quantum linear systems (systems whose Hamiltonian is at most quadratic). The solution is carried out in terms of the application of the transition matrix of the dynamical evolution in the Fourier space. We address two cases: the time-independent coefficients for which we give the solutions for several dissipative models of the quantum harmonic oscillator and the one-dimensional free particle. In the latter, we also derive a heuristic model for a pure damped motion with suppression of diffusion. For the time-dependent coefficient problem, we give some particular cases that are integrable and derive a second order approximation to the generic case in which all parameters are time-dependent. We additionally explore the solutions of the system when the diffusion processes of the dissipative model lie beyond the weak coupling limit.

Generalized master equation for driven quantum oscillators: microscopic origin of nonlinear dissipation and asymmetric resonances

Jakob Wagner, Jeff Maki, Oded Zilberberg +1 more

Driven nonlinear quantum oscillators are a central platform for quantum technologies, yet their dissipative dynamics are typically described using Lindblad or Caldeira-Leggett master equations derived under assumptions that exclude nonlinearities and driving. Here, we derive a generalized Caldeira-Leggett master equation for driven nonlinear oscillators by retaining the full nonlinear and time-dependent system dynamics in the construction of the dissipator. For position- and momentum-dependent system-bath coupling, the dissipator itself becomes dynamically dressed, generating nonlinear and drive-dependent dissipative channels beyond conventional fixed-dissipator approaches. This produces nonlinear damping together with dissipation-induced corrections to the effective drive. The resulting dissipative dynamics suppress large-amplitude excitations and reduce phase-space fluctuations. For a driven Kerr oscillator, this leads to the suppression of bistability, asymmetric resonance responses, and strongly modified fluctuation distributions. More broadly, our results establish a microscopic framework in which nonlinear dynamics and driving directly reshape the dissipative sector of driven open quantum systems.

Damped quantum harmonic oscillator

Аурелиан Исар, A. Sãndulescu

In the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems the damping of the harmonic oscillator is studied. A generalization of the fundamental constraints on quantum mechanical diffusion coefficients which appear in the master equation for the damped quantum oscillator is presented; the Schrödinger and Heisenberg representations of the Lindblad equation are given explicitly. On the basis of these representations it is shown that various master equations for the damped quantum oscillator used in the literature are particular cases of the Lindblad equation and that the majority of these equations are not satisfying the constraints on quantum mechanical diffusion coefficients. Analytical expressions for the first two moments of coordinate and momentum are also obtained by using the characteristic function of the Lindblad master equation. The master equation is transformed into Fokker-Planck equations for quasiprobability distributions. A comparative study is made for the Glauber $P$ representation, the antinormal ordering $Q$ representation and the Wigner $W$ representation. It is proven that the variances for the damped harmonic oscillator found with these representations are the same. By solving the Fokker-Planck equations in the steady state, it is shown that the quasiprobability distributions are two-dimensional Gaussians with widths determined by the diffusion coefficients. The density matrix is represented via a generating function, which is obtained by solving a time-dependent linear partial differential equation derived from the master equation. Illustrative examples for specific initial conditions of the density matrix are provided.

Quantum Dynamics of Interacting oscillators in a thermal medium: A novel scheme

Ronak Moradi, Fardin Kheirandish

We develop an exact analytical framework for studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting quantum harmonic oscillators coupled to a modelled thermal reservoir and driven by external classical fields. The total Hamiltonian is diagonalized via successive Bogoliubov transformations, enabling a nonperturbative treatment of dissipation and driving. For two coupled oscillators with an external source applied to the first, we derive explicit energy expressions and analyze their dependence on coupling and bath parameters. The phase-space structure is characterized through Husimi $Q$-functions for initial separable coherent and number states. We obtain the reduced density matrix elements in the number-state basis and demonstrate that, in the absence of driving and at zero temperature, the reduced density matrix of the main system satisfies the Lindblad master equation. A generating function for the Husimi function is introduced to facilitate computation of higher-order correlations. The analysis is then generalized to $n$ interacting oscillators, with analytical energy expressions provided and the case $n=3$ examined in detail. Our results establish a versatile and exact framework for driven-dissipative quantum systems, with potential applications in quantum thermodynamics, open quantum systems, and many-body physics.
