Abstract

Driven nonlinear quantum oscillators are a central platform for quantum technologies, yet their dissipative dynamics are typically described using Lindblad or Caldeira-Leggett master equations derived under assumptions that exclude nonlinearities and driving. Here, we derive a generalized Caldeira-Leggett master equation for driven nonlinear oscillators by retaining the full nonlinear and time-dependent system dynamics in the construction of the dissipator. For position- and momentum-dependent system-bath coupling, the dissipator itself becomes dynamically dressed, generating nonlinear and drive-dependent dissipative channels beyond conventional fixed-dissipator approaches. This produces nonlinear damping together with dissipation-induced corrections to the effective drive. The resulting dissipative dynamics suppress large-amplitude excitations and reduce phase-space fluctuations. For a driven Kerr oscillator, this leads to the suppression of bistability, asymmetric resonance responses, and strongly modified fluctuation distributions. More broadly, our results establish a microscopic framework in which nonlinear dynamics and driving directly reshape the dissipative sector of driven open quantum systems.

Analytic solutions to various dissipation models of the simple and driven quantum harmonic oscillator

Pablo Carlos López Vázquez, Roberto Santos Silva

We obtain analytic solutions to various models of dissipation of the quantum harmonic oscillator, employing a simple method in the Wigner function Fourier transform description of the system; and study as an exemplification, the driven open quantum harmonic oscillator. The environmental models we use are based on optical master equations for the zero and finite temperature bath and whose open dynamics are described by a Lindblad master equation, and also we use the Caldeira-Leggett model for the high temperature limit, in the the under damped an the over damped case. Under the Wigner Fourier transform or chord function as it has been called, it becomes particularly simple to solve the dynamics of the open oscillator in the sense that the dynamics of the system are reduced to the application of an evolution matrix related to the damped motion of the oscillator.

A field-biased quantum master equation and its Markovian limit

M. Gabriela Boada G., Andrea Delgado, Jose Morales E

We present a non-equilibrium quantum master equation for a driven open quantum system in the presence of a continuously applied electromagnetic field. Starting from a driven Caldeira-Leggett (CL) model in which the external electromagnetic field couples simultaneously to the subsystem and reservoir degrees of freedom, the canonical fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) relations that encode the coefficients of the master equation can no longer be expected to hold. The bath statistics acquire an explicit dependence on the two-time autocorrelation function of the applied field, leading to drive-biased noise correlations and the potential for non-Markovian dynamics. By eliminating the reservoir degrees of freedom at the operator level, we obtain a modified Hu-Paz-Zhang (HPZ) master equation, in which the diffusion coefficients and coherent forces inherit an explicit memory dependence on the external field. We demonstrate that the physically observable resonant frequency remains encoded in the homogeneous Green's function of the Generalized Langevin equation (GLE), while the drive-induced corrections manifest exclusively through modified diffusion and drift terms, should the drive be treated classically. The resultant field-modified HPZ master provides a unified microscopic framework for understanding field-biased open quantum systems with direct pertinence to a wide variety of experiments in quantum optics and microscopic quantum circuits.

Phase-space dynamics of a quantum dissipative Kerr nonlinear oscillator

Karjula, Matias

Parametrically driven Kerr nonlinear quantum oscillator plays a central role in quantum optics, superconducting circuits, and in engineered light-matter interactions. For the development of future quantum technologies, it is crucial to understand the behavior of this quantum system under realistic dissipative conditions. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the phase-space dynamics of a dissipative Kerr nonlinear oscillator under different driving regimes and corresponding dissipation channels, with a particular focus on the emergence of nonclassical features in phase space. The aim is also to understand how nonlinearity and different driving mechanisms influence quantum properties such as coherence, nonclassicality, and phase-space structure. The analysis was carried out using the Wigner phase-space formalism and numerical simulations of the Lindblad master equation. The results show that in the case of finite nonlinearity the coherence time is prolonged compared to the harmonic case. In the single photon regime, the interplay between the photon drive and nonlinearity can lead to coherence revivals after which the system relaxes into a squeezed steady state. In the two photon and dissipation regime, the system exhibits parity-protected dynamics, leading to very long coherence times.

Dissipation in open quantum systems

Luca Ferialdi

Caldeira and Leggett (CL) in a seminal paper derived a master equation describing Markovian Quantum Brownian motion. Such an equation suffered of not being completely positive, and many efforts have been made to solve this issue. We show that, when a careful mathematical analysis is performed, the model considered by CL leads to a non dissipative master equation. We argue that the correct way to understand the master equation derived in the CL regime is to consider it non-Markovian. Moreover, we show that if one wants to provide a microscopic description of Quantum Brownian motion one always needs to consider a non-Markovian dynamics. We conclude that dissipation is a genuinely non-Markovian feature.

Quantum Dynamics of Interacting oscillators in a thermal medium: A novel scheme

Ronak Moradi, Fardin Kheirandish

We develop an exact analytical framework for studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting quantum harmonic oscillators coupled to a modelled thermal reservoir and driven by external classical fields. The total Hamiltonian is diagonalized via successive Bogoliubov transformations, enabling a nonperturbative treatment of dissipation and driving. For two coupled oscillators with an external source applied to the first, we derive explicit energy expressions and analyze their dependence on coupling and bath parameters. The phase-space structure is characterized through Husimi $Q$-functions for initial separable coherent and number states. We obtain the reduced density matrix elements in the number-state basis and demonstrate that, in the absence of driving and at zero temperature, the reduced density matrix of the main system satisfies the Lindblad master equation. A generating function for the Husimi function is introduced to facilitate computation of higher-order correlations. The analysis is then generalized to $n$ interacting oscillators, with analytical energy expressions provided and the case $n=3$ examined in detail. Our results establish a versatile and exact framework for driven-dissipative quantum systems, with potential applications in quantum thermodynamics, open quantum systems, and many-body physics.

Time-dependent Markovian quantum master equation

Roie Dann, Amikam Levy, Ronnie Kosloff

We construct a quantum Markovian master equation for a driven system coupled to a thermal bath. The derivation utilizes an explicit solution of the propagator of the driven system. This enables the validity of the master equation to be extended beyond the adiabatic limit. The nonadiabatic master equation (NAME) is derived employing the weak system-bath coupling limit. The NAME is valid when a separation of timescales exists between the bath dynamics and the external driving. In contrast to the adiabatic master equation, the NAME leads to coupled equations of motion for the population and coherence. We employ the NAME to solve the example of an open driven time-dependent harmonic oscillator. For the harmonic oscillator the NAME predicts the emergence of coherence associated with the dissipation term. As a result of the nonadiabatic driving the thermalization rate is suppressed. The solution is compared with both numerical calculations and the adiabatic master equation.
