Enhancement of six-wave mixing by atomic coherence in a four-level inverted Y system

Yanpeng Zhang, Min Xiao

The authors have considered the coexisting dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) in an open four-level inverted Y configuration. The authors also report an experimental observation of optical pumping-assisted FWM and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-assisted SWM. The efficient SWM can be selected by EIT window and controlled by the coupling as well as dressed field detuning and power. Due to EIT and optical pumping assistance, the enhanced SWM signal is more than ten times lager than the coexisting FWM signal.

Observation of two multiwave mixing processes via dualoptical pumping channels

Shu-Li Huo, Zhaoyang Zhang, Zhenkun Wu +5 more

Based on double optical pumping channels, we experimentally study the competition between two coexistent six-wave mixing (SWM) processes falling into two electromagnetically induced transparency windows by scanning the frequency of the probe field in two similar five-level atomic systems of 85 Rb.By blocking one optical pumping channel unrelated to the four-wave mixing (FWM) process, one SWM process, together with the FWM process, generated by a conjugated small-angle static grating could be observed in the spectrum. Moreover, the other SWM process obtained by blocking the first SWM channel is also observed together with the FWM process in a lower N-type four-level subsystem. These experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.

Conversion from atomic to telecom photons by four-wave mixing in optically pumped warm Rb

Jonathan M. Kwolek, Adam T. Black, Mark Bashkansky

We convert atomic photons of the 87Rb D1 transition at 795 nm to telecom photons at 1529 nm with efficiency of 6% by employing four-wave mixing in a warm vapor. Optical pumping enhances the four-wave mixing process, enabling such high efficiency.
