Abstract

Abstract We study theoretically the spectra of second, third and fourth harmonics from multimode bright squeezed vacuum obtained by type-I broadband high-gain parametric down conversion. The different contributions to the spectra of harmonics are analyzed. A new method for the measurement of second-order correlation function g (2) (0) of parametric down conversion radiation is suggested.

Cascaded frequency up-conversion of bright squeezed vacuum: spectral and correlation properties

Andrei Rasputnyi, Denis A. Kopylov, T. V. Murzina +1 more

High-gain parametric down-conversion (PDC) is inevitably accompanied by cascaded up-conversion (CUpC) of PDC radiation in a nonlinear crystal even if CUpC is nonphase matched. Here we study experimentally and theoretically the spectral properties of broadband phase-matched and nonphase-matched CUpC radiation in a beta barium borate (BBO) crystal. Our calculations of the normalized second-order correlation function predict the super-bunching of CUpC radiation.

Optical harmonic generation enhanced due to ultrafast intensity fluctuations (Conference Presentation)

Denis A. Kopylov, Kirill Yu. Spasibko, Victor L. Krutyanskiy +3 more

The effect of the quantum properties of light on nonlinear processes has been well studied theoretically. It has been shown that the efficiency of n-photon nonlinear processes in many cases scales as the normalized n-th order correlation function. For light with high intensity correlation function, the efficiency of the n-th harmonic generation will be considerably higher than for coherent light. The experimental observation of this effect remained difficult until recently, because of the absence of bright sources with strong and fast intensity fluctuations. For the experimental demonstration of statistical effects in optical harmonic generation we use as a pump the radiation of high-gain parametric down conversion. Such light shows quantum properties (e.g. quadrature or two-mode squeezing) and has large number of photons in one mode. The normalized n-th order correlation function for this light is (2n - 1)!!, which makes it more attractive for nonlinear processes than both coherent and thermal light. For the generation of optical harmonics we used broadband parametric down conversion around frequency-degeneracy (1600 nm) produced in 1cm BBO crystal from Ti:Sapphire laser (800 nm, 1.6ps, 5kHz, 3W mean intensity). Due to spectral filtering and post-selection technique we could vary the statistics of light from coherent to super-bunched, which allowed us to demonstrate the efficiency enhancement for second-, third-, and fourth-harmonic generation. The obtained experimental results show a good agreement with the theory.

Bright squeezed vacuum in a nonlinear interferometer: Frequency and temporal Schmidt-mode description

Polina R. Sharapova, Olga V. Tikhonova, Samuel Lemieux +2 more

Control over the spectral properties of the bright squeezed vacuum (BSV), a highly multimode nonclassical macroscopic state of light that can be generated through high-gain parametric down conversion, is crucial for many applications. In particular, in several recent experiments BSV is generated in a strongly pumped SU(1,1) interferometer to achieve phase supersensitivity, perform broadband homodyne detection, or tailor the frequency spectrum of squeezed light. In this work, we present an analytical approach to the theoretical description of BSV in the frequency domain based on the Bloch-Messiah reduction and the Schmidt-mode formalism. As a special case we consider a strongly pumped SU(1,1) interferometer. We show that different moments of the radiation at its output depend on the phase, dispersion, and the parametric gain in a nontrivial way, thereby providing additional insights on the capabilities of nonlinear interferometers. In particular, a dramatic change in the spectrum occurs as the parametric gain increases.

Superbunched bright squeezed vacuum state

T. Sh. Iskhakov, Angela M. Pérez, Kirill Yu. Spasibko +2 more

In this Letter, we experimentally study the statistical properties of a bright squeezed vacuum state containing up to 10(13) photons per mode (10 μJ per pulse), produced via high-gain parametric down conversion (PDC). The effects of bunching and superbunching of photons were observed for a single-mode PDC radiation by second-order intensity correlation function measurements with analog detectors.

Experimental characterisation of a broadband multimode squeezed light source in the high gain regime

Gil Triginer, Mihai D. Vidrighin, A. Eckstein +3 more

Summary form only given. Recent advances in the design of broadband parametric down-conversion (PDC) sources have opened the possibility to attain a regime of high squeezing previously unacessible in the pulsed domain [1]. However, characterising a PDC source is a challenging task when multiple spectral modes are being squeezed simultaneously and one wants to determine the number of squeezers and their relative strengths. Moreover, as one approaches the high squeezing regime, a number of nonlinear effects that are not usually considered when the source is operated at low pump power become relevant [2, 3].Here we present a technique to perform a complete and self-referenced characterisation of a broadband PDC source using only classical measurements. Often, PDC sources are described by their joint spectral amplitude, which conveys the frequency correlations between the generated photons. Our method complements the information contained in the joint spectrum with a measurement of a second-order process that to our knowledge has not been directly measured until now. Generally, a PDC process can be described as a Bogoliuvov transformation of the bosonic operators of the formaouts (ω) = f dω'Us,s(ω,ω') ains + f dω''Us,i(ω,ω'')(ain i (ω''))† for the signal and analogously for the idler mode. In our work we show that these transfer functions, Us,s(i,i) and Us,i(i,s), can be measured in the stimulated regime [4,5], by scanning the wavelength of a narrowband seed laser and performing a frequency resolved intensity measurement of the generated light.

High-order correlations and ultrafast Wigner negativities in bright-squeezed-vacuum-driven high-harmonic generation

Sebastián de-la-Peña, Heiko Appel, Marcelo F. Ciappina +2 more

High-harmonic generation (HHG) is a prototypical strong-field process in which intense light drives matter to emit radiation at integer multiples of the driving frequency. Extending HHG into the quantum-optical regime offers new opportunities to probe and control strongly nonlinear light-matter interactions using nonclassical states of light. Yet describing this regime requires a fully quantum treatment of the correlated electron-photon dynamics, which becomes computationally challenging for broadband, strongly squeezed fields. Here we solve the quantum-electrodynamical dynamics of a two-level system driven by bright squeezed vacuum in a converged multimode Hilbert space. Both the driving field and emitted harmonics are fully quantized, with the light-matter interaction treated nonperturbatively. This enables direct access to the multimode quantum state and its higher-order correlations beyond semiclassical sampling or perturbative descriptions. We show that squeezed-vacuum driving produces harmonic emission with qualitatively distinct second- and third-order photon correlations compared with coherent excitation. Moreover, back-action from the driven emitter strongly reshapes the incident squeezed field, generating pronounced Wigner-function negativities that evolve on attosecond timescales. Our results establish a fully quantum framework for broadband strong-field dynamics with squeezed light and provide a route to predicting and interpreting quantum-HHG experiments and their extension to more complex emitters.
