Superradiance from spectrally tailored absorption lines in a cavity

Sourabh Kumar, Erhan Sağlamyürek, Daniel Oblak

Superradiance is a coherent emission phenomenon from an ensemble of emitters that share a collective excitation, and has potential applications in quantum metrology, quantum communication, and quantum computing. We demonstrate superradiant emission in a thulium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Tm:YAG) crystal, whose input and output faces are reflection coated to form a cavity that satisfies the impedance matching condition for light on resonance with the Tm transition line. This implementation allows us to observe superradiant emission in the low optical depth regime (OD approx. 1). We engineer the characteristic decay of the superradiant emission by tailoring the inhomogeneously broadened spectrum of Tm:YAG into absorption lines with different shapes, depths, and widths, and perform simulations over a wide range of parameters. We extend this investigation and discuss the possibility of a broadband quantum memory based on superradiance for long-distance quantum networks.

Superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases

N. I. Shamrov

Equations of a semiclassical model of superradiant Rayleigh scattering of high-intensity short light pulses from a Bose-Einstein condensate of dilute atomic gases are solved numerically taking into account the excitation of atoms by coherent Rayleigh radiation and their recoil in the backward direction. The evolution of the populations of coherent atomic states with a particular momentum is studied, and the pulse shape and the structure of the spectrum of such scattering are found in relation to the laser beam intensity and the recoil kinetic energy of atoms.

Shape and duration of superradiance pulses corresponding to neon lines

Anatoly A. Isaev, Mishik A. Kazaryan, Gueorgii G. Petrash

Measurements were made of the shape and duration of superradiance pulses corresponding to the neon lines λ = 6143 and 5400 A. The time resolution in the measurements was 0.5 nsec. The shape and duration of the superradiance pulses depended considerably on the experimental conditions. The duration of these pulses at half-maximum ranged from several nanoseconds to 0.5 nsec.
