Abstract

Abstract In this manuscript, we observed narrowing of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectral width by using superimposed Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams for coupling light. EIT with narrow transparency width has a potential application towards slow light for quantum memory devices. LG beams of σ + and σ − polarization are superimposed and used as coupling light for an EIT experiment. A theoretical model is discussed using a semi-classical treatment and the experimental part confirms the narrowing of EIT width for higher values of ‘ l ’.

A comparative study of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in Λ-, V-, and Ξ-type systems using Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) laser beams

Samim Akhtar, Jayanta K. Saha, Md. Mabud Hossain

In this paper, a theoretical investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) using Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams has been carried out for the three canonical atom-laser coupled systems (e.g. [Formula: see text]-, V-, and [Formula: see text]-type) in [Formula: see text]Rb atom. The required optical Bloch equations (OBEs) are derived for each system. The OBEs are analytically solved in steady-state condition under the weak probe field approximation. We have used the iterative perturbative technique to obtain the probe coherence term. The probe response w.r.t. probe detuning for different orders of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) number of both the pump and probe LG beams has been studied. We have also studied the effect of the OAM number on probe response in both Doppler-free and Doppler-broadened mediums. It has been observed that the EIT signal is squeezed for nonzero OAM number of the pump beam with arbitrary OAM number of the probe beam. It is found that for higher-order OAM number, the EIT signal is further squeezed. The modification of the EIT signal is attributed because of the spatial-dependent Rabi frequency. Our study demonstrates that the dynamic of the probe field inside an atomic medium may be controlled by tuning the OAM number of the LG beam.

The connection between electromagnetically induced transparency in the Zeeman configuration and slow light in hot rubidium vapor

Stanko N. Nikolić, Vladimir Djokic, Nemanja Lučić +4 more

We experimentally studied Zeeman electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances and slow light propagation in hot Rb vapor. Propagation of weak σ− polarized light pulses in the presence of stronger σ+ polarized background through Rb vapor was realized using a single laser beam and the Pockels cell. The dependences of slow light group velocity and fractional pulse delay on the overall laser beam intensity and temporal pulse length showed that lower optical power and longer light pulses lead to improved EIT and slow light features. The connection between EIT and slow light was also investigated showing that narrower and more contrasted EIT resonances are necessary for further decreasing a group velocity.

Enhancement of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption signals in 85Rb atomic vapor medium by using a small external magnetic field

Vikas Singh Chauhan, Rohit Kumar, Dixith Manchaiah +1 more

In the present work, a theoretical and experimental study to enhance electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) signals in an 85 R b atomic vapor medium at room temperature is conducted. Also, switching from EIT to EIA signal at a particular value of the magnetic field is observed. Further, by using circularly polarized coupling light, the dispersion profile of the linearly polarized probe signal is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The nine-level system of 85 R b D2 transition in a ladder-type configuration is fully solved by using the density matrix theory. The simulated results are found in good qualitative agreement with experimental observations. Hence, an experimental setup is developed for (1) achieving enhanced EIT and EIA signal, (2) switching from EIT to EIA, and (3) dispersion measurement. These observations have potential applications towards measurement of the group velocity of light, quantum memory, quantum information, and optical switching.

Extremely narrow resonances in electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption using a Laguerre-Gaussian control beam

Sapam Ranjita Chanu, Vasant Natarajan A

We observe resonances with width 20 times below the natural linewidth for a probe laser on an optical transition, when the same transition is driven by a control laser with a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) profile. The basic mechanism is the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption (EITA). Aligning the Gaussian probe beam to the central hole in the LG control beam simultaneously allows a strong control intensity required for high signal-to-noise ratio and a low intensity in the probe region required to get narrow resonances. We observe these resonances on the $D_2$ line of Rb in a room-temperature vapor cell and show that the linewidth is reduced by a factor of 4 compared to the use of a Gaussian control beam, which should prove advantageous in all applications of EITA.

Narrow bandwidth electromagnetically induced transparency in optically trapped atoms

Bernd Kaltenhäuser, Harald Kübler, Andreas Chromik +3 more

We demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a sample of rubidium atoms, trapped in an optical dipole trap. Mixing a small amount of σ − -polarized light to the weak σ + -polarized probe pulses, we are able to measure the absorptive and dispersive properties of the atomic medium at the same time. Features as small as 4 kHz have been detected on an absorption line with 20 MHz line width.

Sub-natural width of transparency window in 85Rb vapor with D2 transition,

S. M. Iftiquar

We study 85Rb atomic vapor for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and obtain sub-natural EIT spectra at optical power higher than saturation intensity. It is shown that spectral width of transmission and intensity of EIT signal increases with intensity of optical field, which is one of the desirable features for slow light and quantum information processing. A details analysis has been done on such an atomic system.
