Abstract

Dynamics of creation and distraction of coherent states resonantly excited by pair of laser pulses following each other with temporal delay in germanium crystal doped with shallow impurities has been theoretically considered. The power of excited radiation, lattice tempera-ture and limit permissible of inhomogeneous line broadening that necessary to observe of Ramsey interference in such system have been estimated.

On the Possibility of Ramsey Interference in Germanium Doped with Shallow Impurities

Veniamin V. Tsyplenkov, Roman Kh. Zhukavin, V. N. Shastin

Abstract The dynamics of the formation and decay of coherent states of shallow impurity centers in crystalline germanium resonantly excited by a pair of laser pulses, following one another with a time delay is analyzed theoretically. The required laser-radiation power, the upper limit on the lattice temperature, and the allowed inhomogeneous broadening of the impurity lines making possible the observation of Ramsey interference in this system are estimated.

Фотонное эхо в германии с мелкими донорами

В.В. Цыпленков, В.Н. Шастин

A theoretical study was made of the conditions for observing the photon echo effect in a germanium crystal doped with shallow donors. A numerical calculation of the medium polarization excited by a sequence of two optical pulses at a frequency close to the impurity transition frequency has been made. The effect of excitation pulse parameters, such as the pulse duration, the inhomogeneous broadening of impurity transitions and the relaxation rate of population and coherence in the system on the echo is considered. The key aspect in the experimental implementation of the effect is the control of the crystal temperature under photoexcitation, since the rate of coherence relaxation in the system strongly depends on the temperature of the crystal lattice.

Manipulation of Zeeman coherence in solids at room temperature: Ramsey interference in the coherent-population-trapping spectrum of ruby

Roman L. Kolesov, Marlan O. Scully, Olga A. Kocharovskaya

Coherent population trapping (CPT) in a three-level atomic medium pumped by two subsequent short optical pulses is considered under the condition of negligible population decay from the excited optical state. It is shown that the amount of atomic population transferred to the excited state by the combined action of the pulses strongly depends on the phase of the ground-state coherence excited by the first pulse at the arrival time of the second pulse. Oscillatory behavior of optical excitation efficiency on the time delay between the pulses is predicted. It is also shown that saturating optical pulses can produce population inversion in a resonantly pumped quasi-two-level system. A class of solid materials in which the predicted phenomena can be observed at room temperature is found. It includes some rare-earth and transition-metal doped dielectric crystals where Orbach relaxation between ground-state Zeeman states is suppressed: ruby, alexandrite, and several others. On the basis of the theoretical predictions, experimental observation of Ramsey fringes in CPT spectrum of ruby is reported.

Coherent control of third-harmonic generation and multiphoton ionization: Experimental and theoretical studies

Roberto Buffa, R. Eramo, CAVALIERI, STEFANO +1 more

The effect of temporal coherent control on the two-photon-resonant third-harmonic generation and multiphoton ionization into the continuum states of an atomic system is experimentally and theoretically investigated by means of a pair of partially incoherent, identical laser pulses. The evidence of quantum interference as a function of the delay between the pulses is reported. The transition from the resonant to the nonresonant case is also shown. The obtained results agree with the prediction of a theoretical model showing that the onset of quantum interference appears to be related to the coherence time of the laser radiation, which is much shorter than the pulse duration.

Attosecond optical and Ramsey-type interference

Takuya Matsubara, Yasuo Nabekawa, Kenichi L. Ishikawa +2 more

Molecular or atomic coherence generated with the irradiation of ultrashort optical pulses should make a significant role for realizing the control of quantum states in a matter. By virtue of the advancement of the ultrashort light sources towards the short wavelength region, the energy range of the quantum states that could be coherently generated reached much more than 15 eV at the present [1] . In particular, Ramsey-type interference fringes observed by scanning the delay between a pair of phase-locked XUV femtosecond pulses unveiled spectral information of the atomic states [2] - [4] . The time ranges of the delay scans in such preceding studies were long enough to finely resolve the spectral features, while the XUV pulse pairs could not temporally overlap because the light sources were split into two before generating the XUV pulses. The near 0 delay control of the XUV pulse pair is important for investigating the dynamics of a cationic system entangled with an ionized continuum electron [5] . In this paper, we performed the delay scan of the XUV pulse pair starting from the complete temporal overlap to show that the optical interference seamlessly continued to the Ramsey-type atomic interference as a prototype of such study.
