Mean Field and Exact Diagonalization Studies on an SO(5) Symmetric Ladder

Abstract

Abstract Mean field and exact diagonalization studies on the quasiparticle excitation of an SO(5) symmetric two-leg ladder system are reported. It is shown that the two results are in good agreement with each other in the weak coupling limit. It is found that shadow peaks appear above the Fermi surface as a result of quasiparticle excitation which represents a mixture of electron and hole states.

Quasiparticle Energy Dispersion and Shadow Peaks in a Doped SO(5) Symmetric Ladder

Seung-Pyo Hong, Sung‐Ho Suck Salk

Mean field and exact diagonalization studies on the quasiparticle excitation of an SO(5) symmetric two-leg ladder system are reported. It is shown that the energy gap in the quasiparticle excitation is caused by the formation of rung singlet states. We find that shadow peaks can occur above the Fermi surface with antiferromagnetic electron correlations involving only rungs in the spin ladder.

From the Hubbard to the SO(5) Ladder: A Numerical Study

Daniel Duffy, Stephan Haas, Eugene Kim

The Hubbard Hamiltonian on a two-leg ladder is studied numerically using quantum Monte Carlo and Exact Diagonalization techniques. A rung interaction, $V$, is turned on such that the resulting model has an exact SO(5) symmetry when $V=-U$. The evolution of the low energy excitation spectrum is presented from the pure Hubbard ladder to the SO(5) ladder. It is shown that the low energy excitations in the pure Hubbard ladder have an approximate SO(5) symmetry.

The Hubbard Hamiltonian on a two-leg ladder is studied numerically using quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization techniques. A rung interaction, $V,$ is turned on such that the resulting model has an exact SO(5) symmetry when $V=\ensuremath{-}U.$ The evolution of the low-energy excitation spectrum is presented from the pure Hubbard ladder to the SO(5) ladder. It is shown that the low-energy excitations in the pure Hubbard ladder have an approximate SO(5) symmetry.

Properties of lightly dopedt-Jtwo-leg ladders

Matthias Troyer, Hirokazu Tsunetsugu, Thomas Maurice Rice

We have numerically investigated the doped t-J ladder using exact diagonalization. We have studied both the limit of strong interchain coupling and isotropic coupling. The ladder scales to the Luther-Emery liquid regime in the strong interchain coupling limit. In this strong coupling limit there is a simple picture of the excitation spectrum that can be continued to explain the behavior at isotropic coupling. At J=0 we have indications of a ferromagnetic ground state. At a large J/t the ladder is phase separated into holes and a Heisenberg ladder. At intermediate coupling the ground state shows hole pairing with a modified d-wave symmetry. The excitation spectrum separates into a limited number of quasiparticles which carry charge +\ensuremath{\Vert}e\ensuremath{\Vert} and spin 1/2 and a triplet magnon mode. At half filling the former vanish but the latter evolves continuously into the magnon band of the spin liquid. At low doping the quasiparticles form a dilute Fermi gas with a strong attraction but simultaneously the Fermi wave vector, as would be measured in photoemission, is large. The dynamical structure factors are calculated and are found to be very similar to calculations on two-dimensional clusters. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
