On the zero entries in a unitary matrix

Abstract

We investigate the number of zero entries in a unitary matrix. We show that the sets of numbers of zero entries for n×n unitary and orthogonal matrices are the same. They are both the set {0,1,…,n2−n−4,n2−n−2,n2−n} for n>4. We explicitly construct examples of orthogonal matrices with the numbers in the set. We apply our results to construct a necessary condition by which a multipartite unitary operation is a product operation. The latter is a fundamental problem in quantum information. We also construct an n×n orthogonal matrix of Schmidt rank n2−1 with many zero entries, and it solves an open problem in Muller-Hermes and Nechita [Operator Schmidt ranks of bipartite unitary matrices. Linear Algebra Appl. 2018;557:174—187].

Classification of Schmidt-rank-two multipartite unitary gates by singular number

Yi Shen, Lin Chen, Li Zhi Yu

Abstract The multipartite unitary gates are called genuine if they are not product unitary operators across any bipartition. We mainly investigate the classification of genuine multipartite unitary gates of Schmidt rank two (SR-2), by focusing on the multiqubit scenario. For genuine multipartite (excluding bipartite) unitary gates of SR-2, there is an essential fact that their Schmidt decompositions are unique. Based on this fact, we propose a key notion named as singular number (SN) to classify the unitary gates concerned. The SN is defined as the number of local singular operators in the Schmidt decomposition. We then determine the accurate range of SN. For each SN, we formulate the parametric Schmidt decompositions of genuine multiqubit unitary gates under local equivalence. Finally, we extend the study to three-qubit diagonal unitary gates due to the close relation between diagonal unitary gates and SR-2 unitaries. We start with discussing two typical examples of SR-2, one of which is a fundamental three-qubit unitary gate, i.e. the CCZ gate. Then we characterize the diagonal unitary gates of SR greater than two. We show that a three-qubit diagonal unitary gate has SR at most three, and present a necessary and sufficient condition for such a unitary gate of SR-3. This completes the characterization of all genuine three-qubit diagonal unitary gates.

Product states and Schmidt rank of mutually unbiased bases in dimension six

Lin Chen, Li Yu

Abstract We show that if a set of four mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in C 6 exists and contains the identity, then any other basis in the set contains at most two product states and at the same time has Schmidt rank at least three. Here both the product states and the Schmidt rank are defined over the bipartite space C 2 ⊗ C 3 . We also investigate the connection of the Sinkhorn normal form of unitary matrices to the fact that there is at least one vector unbiased to any two orthonormal bases in any dimension.

Diagonal unitary and orthogonal symmetries in quantum theory

Satvik Singh, Ion Nechita

We analyze bipartite matrices and linear maps between matrix algebras, which are respectively, invariant and covariant, under the diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups' actions. By presenting an expansive list of examples from the literature, which includes notable entries like the Diagonal Symmetric states and the Choi-type maps, we show that this class of matrices (and maps) encompasses a wide variety of scenarios, thereby unifying their study. We examine their linear algebraic structure and investigate different notions of positivity through their convex conic manifestations. In particular, we generalize the well-known cone of completely positive matrices to that of triplewise completely positive matrices and connect it to the separability of the relevant invariant states (or the entanglement breaking property of the corresponding quantum channels). For linear maps, we provide explicit characterizations of the stated covariance in terms of their Kraus, Stinespring, and Choi representations, and systematically analyze the usual properties of positivity, decomposability, complete positivity, and the like. We also describe the invariant subspaces of these maps and use their structure to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for separability of the associated invariant bipartite states.

Distinguishability of Quantum States by Separable Operations

Runyao Duan, Yuan Feng, Yu Xin +1 more

In this paper, we study the distinguishability of multipartite quantum states by separable operations. We first present a necessary and sufficient condition for a finite set of orthogonal quantum states to be distinguishable by separable operations. An analytical version of this condition is derived for the case of(D-1) pure states, whereDis the total dimension of the state space under consideration. A number of interesting consequences of this result are then carefully investigated. Remarkably, we show there exists a large class of 2 otimes 2 separable operations not being realizable by local operations and classical communication. Before our work, only a class of 3 otimes 3 nonlocal separable operations was known [Bennett , Phys. Rev. A 59, 1070 (1999)]. We also show that any basis of the orthogonal complement of a multipartite pure state is indistinguishable by separable operations if and only if this state cannot be a superposition of one or two orthogonal product states, i.e., has an orthogonal Schmidt number not less than three, thus generalize the recent work about indistinguishable bipartite subspaces [Watrous, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 080505 (2005)]. Notably, we obtain an explicit construction of indistinguishable subspaces of dimension 7 (or 6) by considering a composite quantum system consisting of two qutrits (resp., three qubits), which is slightly better than the previously known indistinguishable bipartite subspace with dimension 8.

Entangling power of two-qubit unitary operations

Yi Shen, Lin Chen

Abstract The entangling power of a bipartite unitary operation shows the maximum created entanglement with the product input states. For an arbitrary two-qubit unitary operation, it is sufficient to consider its normalized operation U with parameters and c 3 . We show how to compute the entangling power of U when . In particular we construct the analytical expressions of entangling power of such U for two examples. We also formulate the entangling power of bipartite unitary operations of Schmidt rank two for any dimensions.

Diagonal unitary and orthogonal symmetries in quantum theory: II. Evolution operators

Satvik Singh, Ion Nechita

Abstract We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. Our scrutiny reveals that these operators can be used to simulate any bipartite unitary gate via stochastic local operations and classical communication. Furthermore, we establish a one-to-one connection between the set of local diagonal unitary invariant dual unitary operators with maximum entangling power and the set of complex Hadamard matrices. Finally, we discuss distinguishability of unitary operators in the setting of the stated diagonal symmetry.
