Abstract

We study an application of the quantum tomography framework for the time-frequency analysis of modulated signals. In particular, we calculate optical tomographic representations and Wigner-Ville distributions for signals with amplitude and frequency modulations. We also consider time-frequency entropic relations for modulated signals, which are naturally associated with the Fourier analysis. A numerical toolbox for calculating optical time-frequency tomograms based on pseudo Wigner-Ville distributions for modulated signals is provided.

Linear and nonlinear optical signals in probability and phase-space representations

Margarita A. Man’ko

Review of different representations of signals including the phase-space representations and tomographic representations is presented. The signals under consideration are either linear or nonlinear ones. The linear signals satisfy linear quantumlike Schrödinger and von Neumann equations. Nonlinear signals satisfy nonlinear Schrödinger equations as well as Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing solitons in Bose-Einstein condensate. The Ville-Wigner distributions for solitons are considered in comparison with tomographic-probability densities describing solitons completely. different kinds of tomographies — symplectic tomography, optical tomography and Fresnel tomography are reviewed. New kind of map of the signals onto probability distributions of discrete photon number-like variable is discussed. Mutual relations between different transformations of signal functions are established in explicit form. Such characteristics of the signal-probability distribution as entropy is discussed.

Wigner-Ville Distribution Studied in the Context of Quantum Optics

YU Zhi-song

We study optical signals′ Wigner-Ville distribution in the context of quantum optics. We point out that the study can be mathematically concise and physical appealing by using the explicit normally ordered form of the Wigner operator and the entangled Wigner operator,as well as the squeezing operator in the entangled state representation.

States in the Weyl–Wigner and tomographic-probability representations and entropic inequalities

Margarita A. Man’ko, Vladimir I. Man’ko

The homodyne tomographic description of photon states is applied to obtain the evolution equation for the system state in both the quantum and classical domains. Entropic inequalities for optical tomograms and the bounds in uncertainty relations are discussed in the context of a possible experimental check in quantum optics using homodyne photon detection and microwave detection.

Tomographic entropic inequalities in the probability representation of quantum mechanics

Margarita A. Man’ko, Vladimir I. Man’ko

A review of the tomographic-probability representation of classical and quantum states is presented. The tomographic entropies and entropic uncertainty relations are discussed in connection with ambiguities in the interpretation of the state tomograms which are considered either as a set of the probability distributions of random variables depending on extra parameters or as a single joint probability distribution of these random variables and random parameters with specific properties of the marginals. Examples of optical tomograms of photon states, symplectic tomograms, and unitary spin tomograms of qudits are given. A new universal integral inequality for generic wave function is obtained on the base of tomographic entropic uncertainty relations.

Quantum-Tomography Method in Information Processing

Margarita A. Man’ko

Analogy of time-dependent analytic signal to the wave function is used to apply in signal analysis the new tomographic approach developed recently in quantum mechanics and quantum optics. The tomographic probability and analytic signal are shown to be connected by the integral transform with a kernel related to the fractional Fourier transform.
