Insertion/Deletion/Substitution Error Correction by a Modified Successive Cancellation Decoding of Polar Code

Abstract

This paper presents a successive cancellation (SC) decoding of polar codes modified for insertion/deletion/substitution (IDS) error channels, in which insertions and deletions are described by drift values. The recursive calculation of the original SC decoding is modified to include the drift values as stochastic variables. The computational complexity of the modified SC decoding is O (D3) with respect to the maximum drift value D, and O (N log N) with respect to the code length N. The symmetric capacity of polar bit channel is estimated by computer simulations, and frozen bits are determined according to the estimated symmetric capacity. Simulation results show that the decoded error rate of polar code with the modified SC list decoding is lower than that of existing IDS error correction codes, such as marker-based code and spatially-coupled code.

Symbol-Based Successive Cancellation List Decoder for Polar Codes

Chenrong Xiong, Jun Ting Lin, Zhiyuan Yan

Abstract—Polar codes is promising because they can provably achieve the channel capacity while having an explicit construc-tion method. Lots of work have been done for the bit-based decoding algorithm for polar codes. In this paper, generalized symbol-based successive cancellation (SC) and SC list decoding algorithms are discussed. A symbol-based recursive channel combination relationship is proposed to calculate the symbol-based channel transition probability. This proposed method needs less additions than the maximum-likelihood decoder used by the existing symbol-based polar decoding algorithm. In addition, a two-stage list pruning network is proposed to simplify the list pruning network for the symbol-based SC list decoding algorithm. Index Terms—Error control codes, polar codes, successive cancellation decoding, list decoding I.

Efficient stochastic list successive cancellation decoder for polar codes

Xiao Liang, Chuan Zhang, Menghui Xu +2 more

Representing continuous values by streams of random binary bits, stochastic decoding has shown advantages in both hardware efficiency and fault tolerance, therefore has been widely adopted by iterative decoding of error correction codes such as low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and so on. Recently, polar codes, the first codes that can provably achieve the capacity of symmetric binary-input discrete memoryless channels (B-DMCs), have drawn a lot of attentions from both academia and industry. Although, polar codes with list successive cancellation (SC) decoding can outperform several best-known LDPC codes even within high error-rate regions, the linearly increasing hardware complexity makes its efficient implementation difficult. To this end, the stochastic list SC polar decoding algorithm is proposed in this paper to provide a good tradeoff between performance and complexity. In order to increase the decoding performance of stochastic list SC polar decoder, doubling probability approach is presented. The corresponding hardware architecture is also given. The approximate doubling approach is employed to facilitate the efficient implementation. Implementation results have shown that the proposed stochastic list SC polar decoder can achieve a good trade-off between performance and complexity.

Successive Syndrome-Check Decoding of Polar Codes

Seyyed Ali Hashemi, Marco Mondelli, J.M. Cioffi +1 more

A two-part successive syndrome-check decoding of polar codes is proposed with the first part successively refining the received codeword and the second part checking its syndrome. A new formulation of the successive-cancellation (SC) decoding algorithm is presented that allows for successively refining the received codeword by comparing the log-likelihood ratio value of a frozen bit with its predefined value. The syndrome of the refined received codeword is then checked for possible errors. In case there are no errors, the decoding process is terminated. Otherwise, the decoder continues to refine the received code-word. The proposed method is extended to the case of SC list (SCL) decoding by terminating the decoding process when the syndrome of the best candidate in the list indicates no errors. Simulation results show that the proposed method reduces the time-complexity of SC and SCL decoders and their fast variants, especially at high signal-to-noise ratios.

A Modified Successive-Cancellation Stack Polar Decoder

Li Chun, Xinhai Tong

Polar codes represent an emerging correcting codes with power to approach the capacity of a discrete memoryless channel. However, the decoding performance of polar codes with traditional successive cancellation (SC) algorithm cannot match that of the low-density parity-check or Turbo codes. In this paper, a modified successive cancellation stack (MSCS) polar decoder is proposed.Unlike the original SC stack polar (SCS) decoders, we propose a modified path that can significantly reduce latency of SCS decoders.Simulation results in the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel show that modified algorithm has the slightly performance as the SCS algorithm. Moreover, the time and space complexity of the MSCS decoder is much lower than that of the SCS and can be very close to that of the SC in the high SNR regime.

Successive cancellation decoding of polar codes using stochastic computing

Bo Yuan, Keshab K. Parhi

Polar codes have emerged as the most favorable channel codes for their unique capacity-achieving property. To date, numerous approaches for efficient decoding of polar codes have been reported. However, these prior efforts focused on design of polar decoders via deterministic computation, while the behavior of stochastic polar decoder, which can have potential advantages such as low complexity and strong error-resilience, has not been studied in existing literatures. This paper, for the first time, investigates polar decoding using stochastic logic. Specifically, the commonly-used successive cancellation (SC) algorithm is reformulated into the stochastic form. Several methods that can potentially improve decoding performance are discussed and analyzed. Simulation results show that a stochastic SC decoder can achieve similar error-correcting performance as its deterministic counterpart. This work can pave the way for future hardware design of stochastic polar codes decoders.
