In optical sensing the interaction time is what matters most (Conference Presentation)

Abstract

In this talk I explain that enhancement of performance of almost any optical sensor in the end intimately connected to increasing the time of light-matter interaction, i.e. reducing the group velocity of light. Such similarly different phenomena as ENZ (epsilon near zero), plasmonics, micro-cavities, photonic crystals, EIT, (electro-magnetically induced transparency) Fano resonances, and PT (Parity-time) symmetry can all be characterized using the same slow light formalism indicating that their performances are in the end comparable.

Enhancing Light-Matter Interactions in Nanophotonic Structures by Slow Light

Jesper Mørk, Torben Roland Nielsen

We discuss the conditions under which photonic crystal dispersion can be used to enhance light-matter interactions, e.g. by increasing the absorption sensitivity or the degree of light-speed control obtained via electromagnetically induced transparency.

Slow Light without Electromagnetically-Induced Transparency: The Double-Fano Resonance Approach

Gennady B. Shvets, Chihhui Wu, Alexander B. Khanikaev

A new approach to slowing light in plasmonic structures is proposed. We utilize the phenomenon of double-Fano resonance. Specific implementations of such structures based on plasmonic antennas are presented, various applications are outlined.

Kerr non-linearity induced light trapping in negative index medium

Dimishree Neog, Abhijeet Das, Subrata Hazarika

Kerr non-linearity can induce epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material characteristics in negative index material when incident pulse intensity I=Ith , the threshold intensity. Such Kerr induced ENZ regime in NIM, where group velocity approaches zero and phase velocity diverges, is ideal for strong exciton -photon interaction that leads to the formation of polaritons oscillating between photonic and excitonic states with frequency ΩR /h, ΩR being the Rabi frequency. Quantum mechanical analysis using polariton dynamics indicates that Kerr induced slowing down of group velocity of an optical pulse can be an alternative means to trap light in negative index medium by controlling the intensity of the light pulse unlike slow light, stopped light or stationary light generated conventionally through electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in atomic medium.

Gas Sensing using Material and Structural Slow Light Systems

Luc Thévenaz A, Isabelle Dicaire, Sanghoon Chin +1 more

Slowing light is expected to enhance light-matter interaction, leading to more compact sensing devices. By simple tests we show that the reality is more complex and the only relevant quantity is the wave electric field.
