M j selectivity in collisional energy transfer between alkali-metal atoms

Masaaki Baba, Hajime Katô

Na atoms in the magnetic field have been selectively excited to each Zeeman sub-level of either the 3p2P1/2 or 3p 2P3/2 state by a tunable dye laser and the Zeeman spectra of the fluorescence from the collisional populated 3p 2P levels have been measured. From the intensities of the Zeeman lines, the selectivity in the collisional transitions between the Zeeman sub-levels of the 3p 2P1/2 and 3p 2P3/2 states has been directly specified. The time evolution of the σ-polarized fluorescence intensity of the Na(3p 2P1/2→ 3s 2S1/2) transition has been measured following the Na(3p 2P3/2â† 3s 2S1/2) excitation by a σ-polarized short light pulse at H= 129 G. An amplitude modulation was found in the fluorescence from the collisional energy transferred state Na(3p 2P1/2). This is the first observation of quantum beats in collision-induced fluorescence. The frequency of the modulation coincides very well with that of the quantum beats of the resonance fluorescence Na(3p 2P3/2→ 3s 2S1/2), but the phases are opposite. These results are explained by assuming the conservation of coherence during collisional energy transfer.

Sensitized Fluorescence in Vapors of Alkali Atoms. XIII. 62P1/2−62P3/2 Excitation Transfer in Rubidium, Induced in Collisions with Noble Gas Atoms

I. N. Siara, E. S. Hrycyshyn, L. Krause

The cross sections for excitation transfer between the 62P fine-structure substates in rubidium, induced in collisions with noble gas atoms, have been determined in a series of sensitized fluorescence experiments. Mixtures of rubidium vapor and noble gases at pressures varying in the range 0–5 Torr were irradiated with each component of the second 2P rubidium doublet in turn and the following cross sections for 2P mixing were obtained from measurements of sensitised-to-resonance fluorescent intensity ratios. Rb–He: Q12(2P1/2 → 2P3/2) = 29.3 Å2; Q21(2P1/2 ← 2P3/2) = 19.0 Å2. Rb–Ne: Q12 = 10.3 Å2; Q21 = 6.4 Å2. Rb–Ar: Q12 = 24.0 Å2; Q21 = 14.9 Å2. Rb–Kr: Q12 = 23.2 Å2; Q21 = 14.6 Å2. Rb–Xe: Q12 = 43.9 Å2; Q21 = 27.7 Å2 In their dependence on the magnitude of the fine-structure splitting, the values are consistent with previously determined cross sections for mixing in the first and third 2P doublets of alkali atoms.

Collisional Dynamics of the Rubidium 5(2)P Levels

Matthew D. Rotondaro

Abstract : The collisional dynamics of the 5(2)P levels in rubidium has been examined using steady-state laser absorption nd spectrally-resolved laser induced fluorescence techniques. State-to-state cross-sections for energy transfer between Zeeman split levels ranged from 16-248 A2 for collisions with nitrogen and rare gases. These energy transfer cross-sections exhibit a significant dependence on (J,mj) state and certain symmetry relationships are demonstrated. A sub-Doppler spectrum of the Zeeman split levels indicating the isotopic shift in the D1 line of 106 plus or minus 35 was obtained using laser saturation spectroscopy.
