Optical Preparation and Coherent Control of Ultrafast Nonlinear Quantum Superpositions in Exciton Gases: A Case Study for Atomically Thin Semiconductors

Florian Katsch, Andreas Knorr

We report on the optical preparation of coherent superpositions of exciton and biexciton states manifested in temporal nonlinear oscillations in interacting exciton gases. The effect is illustrated for atomically thin semiconductors, where the reflected light reveals these interactions in a unique way.The occurring nonlinear coherent oscillations are counteracted by incoherent excitation-induced dephasing, a phenomenon which originates from a new type of quantum interference between excitons and the twoexciton scattering continuum. To improve the experimental accessibility, we discuss different methods to control the oscillation modulation depth by modifying the mutual interplay of the exciton-biexciton superposition and excitation-induced dephasing. We find that the coherent optical response can be manipulated by the polarization degree of the exciting light field, the laser detuning, external magnetic fields, and quantum coherent feedback. The extraordinary temporal behavior and its control distinguishes the nonlinear coherent oscillations from atomic Rabi oscillations and enables their engineering based on our proposed control schemes.

Observation of large coherent nonlinearity caused by exciton-exciton interaction at exciton resonance in ZnSe

Takanao Saiki, Kenneth J. Takeuchi, Makoto Kuwata‐Gonokami

Excitonic nonlinearity in wide-gap semiconductors has a strong possibility that we can realize efficient ultrafast optical interactions. Recently, we have observed very large third-order nonlinear phase shift in ZnSe layers grown by MBE on GaAs substrate [1], The third-order nonlinear susceptibility at exciton resonance is more than 10–2 esu at 10 K. Because of the biaxial strain, the valence band splits into a heavy- and a light-hole branches at Γ point [2]. To clarify the intrinsic nature of excitonic nonlinearity, the materials which are free from such strain are preferable. In this report, we present our experiments on excitonic nonlinearity using ZnSe homoepitaxial layers which are free from the strain effects [3], and discuss the origin of enhanced nonlinearity at exciton resonance in ZnSe.

Exciton-exciton correlation in the ultrafast nonlinear optical response in the nonperturbative regime

Salvatore Savasta, Omar Di Stefano, R. Girlanda

Summary form only given. The ultrafast nonlinear optical response of semiconductor-microcavities (SMCs) in the nonperturbative regime is attracting growing interest for exploring fundamental light-matter interactions in many-particle quantum systems, as well as for the future implementations of ultrafast photonic devices. In spite of many investigations, the coherent dynamics of excitonic nonlinear-response in the nonperturbative regime has not been fully understood. Open questions are how strong exciton-cavity coupling affects exciton-exciton (X-X) interactions, and how in turn the X-X correlation influences the nonlinear response of SmCs. We investigate these open questions and show that the nonperturbative regime provides an unprecedented tool for investigating four-particle correlations. We start from the equations for the third order exciton polarization and cavity field describing quantum optical effects and coherent nonlinear optics in SMCs, perform the semiclassical factorization and include multiple scattering processes.
