Theory of bandwidth induced asymmetry reversal in optical double resonances

D P O'Brien, S. Swain

The authors examine the theory of optical double resonance using two lasers whose finite linewidths are produced by the process of phase-diffusion. Their lineshapes, which are nonLorentzian, are characterised by a bandwidth B and a cut off C. The authors are concerned with obtaining an analytic theory; they achieve this by assuming the ratio B/C to be small and work to first order in B/C (although the method can be extended to higher order in B/C). They obtain analytic expressions for the optical double resonance spectrum and discuss the results of recent experiments by Hogan et al. (1978) and Nitz et al. (1981) in which it was found that the asymmetry of the peaks in the optical double resonance spectrum changed with detuning. It is found that a qualitative understanding can be achieved but that a full quantitative comparison is not yet possible.

Double radio-optical resonance in87RB atomic vapour in a finite-size bufferless cell

Andrey Litvinov, Georgy A. Kazakov, Boris G. Matisov +1 more

We study theoretically the formation of a double radio-optical resonance (DROR) in 87 Rb vapour in a cell with an anti-relaxation coating. We develop a quantum-kinetic approach to the study of the Dicke narrowing. We examine various DROR schemes for different polarizations of the laser radiation. We find that the short-term stability σy of a DROR-based frequency standard improves significantly (by an order of magnitude) if a laser with a broad spectrum is used, in comparison to the case of excitation by a narrow-band laser radiation, and reaches ultimately the value σy ∼ 1 × 10 −14 τ −1/2 , where τ is the integration time (in seconds).

Electrically Tunable Dicke Effect in Double-Ring Resonator

Arif E. Çetin, Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu

The Dicke effect is examined in an all-optical system of an optical waveguide side coupled to two interacting ring resonators in a liquid crytal environment. The system is shown to exhibit all the signatures of the Dicke effect under an active and reversible control by an applied voltage.
