Abstract

An enhanced absorption spectrum by Fano interference is proposed to measure the tunneling between a discrete state and a continuum in asymmetric quantum wells (QWs). Interestingly, the asymmetry of the enhanced absorption spectrum is sensitive to tunneling strength, which can be used to measure the tunneling in QWs. Further study shows that the asymmetry of a nonlinear absorption spectrum is greater than that of a linear absorption spectrum, indicating better probe sensitivity. The simulation results show that the probe sensitivity based on nonlinear absorption is approximately 10 times larger than that of linear absorption. In addition, the effects of control-field intensity and detuning on probe sensitivity are evaluated.

Enhancing Kerr nonlinearity in an asymmetric double quantum well via Fano interference

We investigate the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity in an asymmetric GaAs double quantum well via Fano interference, which is caused by tunneling from the excited subband to the continuum. In our structure, owing to Fano interference, the Kerr nonlinearity can be enhanced by appropriately choosing the values of the detunings and the intensity of the pump field, while cancel the linear and nonlinear absorptions.

Switching of amplification to absorption with enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in double quantum wells via Fano interference

Rohit Mukherjee, Nitu Borgohain, Rohit Hazra

Abstract In this communication, we investigate linear and nonlinear (Kerr) responses in an asymmetric double quantum wells induced by a weak probe and controlled by a signal field under double Λ excitation via the Fano interference. By carefully tuning the control field intensities, probe detuning and relative phase of the interacting electromagnetic fields, the amplification as well as the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be achieved to an efficient level in the proposed scheme. We observe that the absorption of the probe and signal fields decrease with the decrease in the strength of the Fano interference (ξ), while the Kerr nonlinearity enhances by almost ten times, reaching a value of the order ~ 10 − 10 m 2 / V 2 under the regime of EIT. The results presented may serve as a valuable reference for designing optimized slow and fast-light, solid-based optical switching devices, offering significant advantages over those based on atomic media.

Enhanced fifth-order nonlinearity with competing linear and nonlinear susceptibility via Fano interference

Chen Li, Jing Wang, Li‐Dan Lin +4 more

Enhanced fifth-order nonlinearity with Fano interference is theoretically studied in asymmetric double quantum wells. The resonant tunneling induces constructive interference for third- and fifth-order nonlinearities. Their competition causes a transparency window at some frequency detuning, where the fifth-order refractive index can be simultaneously enhanced by Fano interference. Simulation results show that fifth-order nonlinearity can be enhanced by about 10 times compared to that without the Fano effect. Also, the influence of different strengths of resonant tunneling coupling and Fano interference on enhanced high-order nonlinearity is discussed.

THE STRENGTH OF FANO INTERFERENCE EFFECTS ON THE PROBE ABSORPTION IN ASYMMETRIC SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM WELLS

Zhiping Wang

We investigate the strength of Fano interference effects on the probe absorption spectra in asymmetric semiconductor quantum wells driven coherently by a probe laser field. We find that the probe absorption can be dramatically reduced due to the strength of the Fano interference, and the effect of the energy splitting on the probe absorption is also discussed. Our study is much more practical than its atomic counterpart due to its flexible design and the controllable interference strength. Thus it may provide some possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics and solid-state quantum information science.

Phase control of light propagation via Fano interference in asymmetric double quantum wells

Wen‐Xing Yang, Jia-Wei Lu, Zhikang Zhou +2 more

We investigate the light propagation and dynamical control of a weak pulsed probe field in asymmetric double quantum wells via Fano interference, which is caused by tunneling from the excited subbands to the same continuum. Our results show that the system can produce anomalous and normal dispersion regions with negligible absorption by choosing appropriate coupling strength of the tunneling and the Fano interference. Interesting enough, the dispersion can be switched between normal and anomalous by adjusting the relative phase between the pulsed probe and coherent control fields owing to the existence of the perfectly Fano interference. Thus, the relative phase can be regarded as a switch to manipulate light propagation with subluminal or superluminal. The temporal and spatial dynamics of the pulsed probe field with hyperbolic secant envelope are analyzed.
