Three-dimensional electronic spectroscopy of excitons in GaAs quantum wells

Daniel B. Turner, Katherine W. Stone, Kenan Gündoğdu +1 more

We demonstrate three-dimensional (3D) electronic Fourier transform spectroscopy of GaAs quantum wells using four fully phase-coherent, noncollinear optical fields. Since the full complex signal field is measured as a function of all three time intervals, nearly every peak in the resulting 3D spectral solid arises from a distinguishable sequence of transitions represented by a single Feynman pathway. We use the 3D spectral peaks to separate two pathways involving weakly bound mixed biexcitons generated in different time orders. In the process, we reveal a peak that was previously obscured by a correlated but unbound exciton pair coherence. We also demonstrate a calibration procedure for the carrier frequency which yields biexciton binding energy values with high accuracy.

Biexcitons in coupled quantum dots as a source of entangled photons

Oliver Gywat, Guido Burkard, Daniel Loss

We study biexcitonic states in two tunnel-coupled semiconductor quantum dots and show that such systems provide the possibility to produce polarization-entangled photons or spin-entangled electrons that are spatially separated at production. We distinguish between the various spin configurations and calculate the low-energy biexciton spectrum using the Heitler-London approximation as a function of magnetic and electric fields. The oscillator strengths for the biexciton recombination involving the sequential emission of two photons are calculated. The entanglement of the photon polarizations resulting from the spin configuration in the biexciton states is quantified as a function of the photon emission angles.

Polaritonic Stop-Band Transparency via Exciton-Biexciton Coupling in CuCl

Stefano Chesi, M. Artoni, Giuseppe Carlo La Rocca +2 more

Radiation is almost completely reflected within the exciton-polariton stop band of a semiconductor, as in the typical case of CuCl. We predict, however, that a coherently driven exciton-biexciton transition allows for the propagation of a probe light beam within the stop band. The phenomenon is reminiscent of electromagnetically induced transparency effects occurring in three-level atomic systems, except that it here involves delocalized electronic excitations in a crystalline structure via a frequency and wave-vector selective polaritonic mechanism. A well-developed transparency, favored by the narrow linewidth of the biexciton, is established within the stop band where a probe pulse may propagate with significant delays. The transparency window can be controlled via the pump beam detuning and intensity.
