Abstract

We compute the ground-state phase diagram of the three-band Hubbard model in various published parametrizations using density matrix embedding theory. We study the atomic-scale nature of the antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) orders, explicitly including the oxygen degrees of freedom. In the case of the AF order, as expected, the local magnetic moment localizes entirely at the copper sites and decays with doping, while in the SC phase we observe a local $p_{x (y)}$ [or $d_{xz (yz)}$]-symmetry modulation of the pair density on the Cu-O bonds within the larger scale $d_{x^2 - y^2}$-wave SC pairing order between Cu-Cu and O-O. While all parametrizations of the model display AF and SC phases, the decay of AF order with doping is too slow compared to the experimental phase diagram, and further, coexistence of AF and SC orders occurs in all parameter sets. Our work highlights the importance of the oxygen degrees of freedom in the study of atomic-scale SC orders, as well as the necessity of re-evaluating current parametrizations of the three-band Hubbard model.

Ground-state phase diagram of the square lattice Hubbard model from density matrix embedding theory

Bo-Xiao Zheng, Garnet Kin‐Lic Chan

We compute the ground-state phase diagram of the Hubbard and frustrated Hubbard models on the square lattice with density matrix embedding theory using clusters of up to 16 sites. We provide an error model to estimate the reliability of the computations and complexity of the physics at different points in the diagram. We find superconductivity in the ground state as well as competition between inhomogeneous charge, spin, and pairing states at low doping. The estimated errors in the study are below ${T}_{c}$ in the cuprates and on the scale of contributions in real materials that are neglected in the Hubbard model.

Pair density wave in the doped three-band Hubbard model on two-leg square cylinders

Hong‐Chen Jiang

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconducting (SC) state with a spatially modulated order parameter. Although much is known about the properties of the PDW state, its realization in microscopic models with divergent susceptibility has been challenging. Here we report a density-matrix renormalization group study of a three-band Hubbard model (also known as the Emery model) for cuprates on long two-leg square cylinders. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with that of a PDW state with mutually commensurate and power-law SC, charge (CDW), and spin (SDW) density wave correlations. The SC correlations are dominant between neighboring Cu sites with $d$-wave pairing symmetry. Interestingly, we find that the near-neighbor interactions, especially the near-neighbor attractive ${V}_{pd}$ interaction between neighboring Cu and oxygen sites, can notably enhance the SC correlations while simultaneously suppressing the CDW correlations. For a modestly strong attractive ${V}_{pd}$, the SC correlations become quasi-long-ranged with a divergent PDW susceptibility.

Phase Diagram of a Three-Orbital Model for High- Tc Cuprate Superconductors

Cédric Weber, Thierry Giamarchi, Chandra Mohan Varma

We study the phase diagram of an effective three-orbital model of the cuprates using variational Monte Carlo calculations on asymptotically large lattices and exact diagonalization on a 24-site cluster. States with ordered orbital current loops (LC), itinerant antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity, and the Fermi liquid are investigated using appropriate Slater determinants refined by Jastrow functions for on-site and intersite correlations. We find an LC state stable in the thermodynamic limit for a range of parameters compatible with the Fermi surface of a typical hole doped superconductor provided the transfer integrals between the oxygen atoms have signs determined by the effects of indirect transfer through the Cu-4s orbitals as suggested by Andersen. The results of the calculations are that the LC phase gives way at lower dopings to an antiferromagnetism phase, and at larger dopings to superconductivity and Fermi liquid phases.

Phase diagram of cuprate high-temperature superconductors based on the optimization Monte Carlo method

Takashi Yanagisawa, Masanori Miyazaki, Yamaji K.

It is important to understand the phase diagram of electronic states in the CuO2 plane to clarify the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. We investigate the ground state of electronic models with strong correlation by employing the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. We consider the two-dimensional Hubbard model as well as the three-band [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] model. We use the improved wave function that takes account of inter-site electron correlation to go beyond the Gutzwiller wave function. The ground state energy is lowered considerably, which now gives the best estimate of the ground state energy for the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The many-body effect plays an important role as an origin of spin correlation and superconductivity in correlated electron systems. We investigate the competition between the antiferromagnetic state and superconducting state by varying the Coulomb repulsion [Formula: see text], the band parameter [Formula: see text] and the electron density [Formula: see text] for the Hubbard model. We show phase diagrams that include superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. We expect that high-temperature superconductivity occurs near the boundary between antiferromagnetic phase and superconducting one. Since the three-band [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] model contains many-band parameters, high-temperature superconductivity may be more likely to occur in the [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] model than in single-band models.

Fidelity study of the superconducting phase diagram in the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model

Chunjing Jia, Brian Moritz, Cheng-Chien Chen +2 more

Extensive numerical studies have demonstrated that the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model contains much of the key physics in cuprate high-temperature superconductors. However, there is no definitive proof that the Hubbard model truly possesses a superconducting ground state or, if it does, of how it depends on model parameters. To answer these longstanding questions, we study an extension of the Hubbard model including an infinite-range $d$-wave pair field term, which precipitates a superconducting state in the $d$-wave channel. Using exact diagonalization on 16-site square clusters, we study the evolution of the ground state as a function of the strength of the pairing term. This is achieved by monitoring the fidelity metric of the ground state, as well as determining the ratio between the two largest eigenvalues of the $d$-wave pair/spin/charge-density matrices. The calculations show a $d$-wave superconducting ground state in doped clusters bracketed by a strong antiferromagnetic state at half filling controlled by the Coulomb repulsion $U$ and a weak short-range checkerboard charge ordered state at larger hole doping controlled by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. We also demonstrate that negative ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ plays an important role in facilitating $d$-wave superconductivity.
