Stark-Effekt-Untersuchung der Hyperfeinstruktur des 3 2P3/2-Zustands von Natrium mit der Level-crossing-Methode / Stark-Effect Investigation of the Hyperfine Structure of the 3 2P3/2-State of Sodium by Level-Crossing-Method

D. Zimmermann

Abstract The level-crossing-method has been used for an investigation of the hyperfine structure of the first excited 3 2P3/2-state of sodium applying an additional electric field parallel to the usual mag. netic field. By means of a detailed analysis of the measured change in intensity of the scattered fluorescence light due to the electric field the constant β of the quadratic Stark-effect of the 3 2P3/2-state of sodium was deduced to be β= (10.8± 1.2) kc/s·(kV/cm)2. The experimental result will be discussed with respect to a determination of upper and lower limits for oscillator strengths of transitions between the 3 2P3/2-state and S-states in the sodium spectrum.

Avoided level crossings betweensstates and Stark states in Rydberg Rb atoms

M. Gatzke, James Veale, W. R. Swindell +1 more

We have measured the locations and widths of the avoided level crossings between (n+3)s states and n,k Stark states in Rydberg Rb atoms with principal quantum numbers n between 16 and 25. We use two-step laser excitation to excite (n+3)s states in the presence of an electric field and observe a change in the number of atoms driven to higher-lying states by blackbody radiation as the electric field is tuned through the avoided level crossings. We have measured both the positions and widths of the avoided crossings. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Selective field ionization in Li and Rb: Theory and experiment

F. Robicheaux, C. Wesdorp, Lambertus D. Noordam

We present a direct comparison between calculated and measured ionization in Li and Rb when an initially bound Rydberg electron is stripped from the atom by ramping an electric field [0.415 V/(cm ns)]. We describe the method used to calculate the field dependence of the ionization; the method can be used to evolve the population from field strengths where three or more n manifolds cross to the fields where the electron is stripped from the atom. The essential feature of the method is the repeated application of the Landau-Zener approximation for all of the level crossings as the field is ramped. We also give a description of the dynamics of Li and Rb in the ramping field. We observe that the Li selective field ionization is sensitive to the Stark levels within an n manifold, while for Rb only an n dependence is observed.
