Abstract

Space information network (SIN), which has the characteristics of large capacity, high reliability, and wide coverage, can be effectively applied to the Internet of Things (IoT) business. However, SIN is vulnerable to various attacks due to its highly exposed links, and the power and processing capacity of satellites and IoT devices (IoTDs) are usually limited. Meanwhile, massive IoTDs connecting to SIN in an instant incur a severe signaling congestion and there is no authentication protocol proposed for massive IoTDs in SIN. In this article, we first propose a novel semi-aggregated signature mechanism and session key agreement mechanism. Then, based on the above two mechanisms, we propose a novel access authentication scheme named lattice-based access authentication (LAA) which contains two types of lattice-based authentication protocols: 1) LAA for massive IoTDs and 2) LAA for a single IoTD. The security analysis by employing the formal provable security analysis, the automation verification tool named Scyther, the Burrows-Abadi-Needham-logic, and the informal security analysis demonstrate that our proposed protocols successfully achieve these security properties, including mutual authentication, conditional anonymity, unlinkability, data confidentiality, data integrity, unforgeability, undeniability, key establishment, perfect forward/backward secrecy (PFS/PBS), and resistance against protocol attacks and quantum attacks. We further evaluate the performance of our proposed protocols with regard to signaling overhead, transmission overhead, computational overhead, and authentication delay, which shows that our proposed protocols can provide high efficiency.

Anti-Quantum Certificateless Group Authentication for Massive Accessing IoT Devices

Pengbo Xu, Huici Wu, Xiaofeng Tao +3 more

Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most representative application scenarios in the 5G and 6G era. The concurrent access of massive IoT devices definitely poses enormous communication, computation, and certificate management challenges to the wireless authentication. Moreover, the emergence of quantum computing makes classical cryptography-based authentication protocols, such as 5G-AKA, more easier to be broken. Facing the challenges posed by the massive concurrent authentication and quantum attacks, this paper proposes a lattice cryptography based group authentication scheme, where lattice-based aggregate signature algorithm and identity-based encryption (IBE) are leveraged to achieve simultaneous authentication of concurrent accessed devices. The proposed authentication scheme eliminates the process of public key certificate management, greatly reducing the storage overhead of core network. Moreover, the utilization of lattice cryptography enables the resistance of quantum attacks. The proposed solution does not rely on additional security assumptions such as security channel or trusted group center, making it more flexible to be deployed in actual network scenario. Finally, formal security analysis of the proposed protocol is provided with the tool ProVerif. It is demonstrated that the proposed protocol can satisfy the goals of identity privacy, authentication, data confidentiality and forward secrecy. In addition, compared with existing advanced solutions, the outperformance of the proposed scheme in terms of computation overhead, signaling overhead, communication overhead, and security properties is validated with simulations.

An Anti-Quantum Authentication Protocol for Space Information Networks Based on Ring Learning with Errors

Junyan Guo, Ye Du, Xuesong Wu +1 more

With the continuous development of satellite communication and Internet of things technology, more and more devices can access space information networks (SIN) and enjoy satellite services everywhere in the world. However, due to the openness of the air-to-ground channel, the device will face a series of security threats when accessing SIN, such as replay attacks, eavesdropping attacks, impersonation attacks, and man-in-the-middle attacks. These security threats will lead to illegal entity access and further endanger the reliability and availability of the system. Although scholars have proposed many enhanced security access authentication protocols, most of them have been proved to have security vulnerabilities. In addition, with the development of quantum computing, the previous authentication protocols based on some asymmetric cryptographic mechanisms such as discrete logarithm and elliptic curve cryptographic mechanisms may face new security challenges. In this context, this paper proposes a novel anti-quantum access authentication protocol based on ring learning with errors (RLWE), which meets more security requirements and greatly reduces the authentication delay through pre-negotiation. Through the security analysis and performance analysis, it is shown that our protocol can be more suitable for delay-sensitive IoT devices to access SIN while ensuring higher security.

A post-quantum authenticated key establishment protocol in healthcare systems

Amir Hossein Salmani, Maryam Rajabzadeh Asaar

Abstract In internet of things (IOT) healthcare systems, sensitive patient information is transmitted over the network to medical professionals. Numerous lightweight authentication protocols have been proposed; however, most of them remain vulnerable to various cyberattacks, allowing attackers to eavesdrop on or manipulate transmitted data. We examine several recently proposed lightweight authentication schemes for healthcare systems. Our security analysis demonstrates that these schemes remain vulnerable to malicious gateway attacks, desynchronization attacks, and key screw attacks. .To address these issues and ensure post- quantum security in healthcare IoT, we propose a post-quantum key establishment protocol based on lattice- based cryptography (LWE). the proposed scheme prevents the gateway from accessing both the secret keys and their parameters, thereby eliminating the possibility of malicious gateway attacks. The proposed protocol ensures user anonymity, forward secrecy, and resistance to impersonation, key screw, and desynchronization attacks.. The proposed protocol ensures secure and efficient establishment of three-round key establishment among entities . Our performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme achieves lower computation and communication overhead compared to recent related works. The security of the protocol is thoroughly analyzed through informal reasoning, Burrows–Abadi–Needham (BAN) logic, and ProVerif, confirming its robustness and suitability for resource-constrained IoT-based healthcare environments.

Post-Quantum Lattice-Based Secure Reconciliation Enabled Key Agreement Protocol for IoT

Dharminder Dharminder, Challa Bhageeratha Reddy, Ashok Kumar Das +2 more

The authenticated key agreement is one of the major security services that can be used to secure an Internet of Things (IoT) environment, where the devices collect the data and the data is then aggregated at the cloud server, and then a user needs to access the data stored at the server(s) securely. For this purpose, after a mutual authentication performed between a user and the accessed server, a session key needs to be established among them for secure communication. In this article, we design an efficient lattice-based authenticated key exchange protocol using ring-based version of learning with errors assumption for the IoT-enabled smart devices. The proposed protocol is basically a key exchange that uses the reconciliation mechanism. The detailed security analysis under the standard model has been performed along with the informal security analysis to show that the proposed protocol is robust against different attacks. We then simulate the proposed protocol under the NS-3 simulator to measure the network performance parameters like network throughput and latency. A comparative analysis shows that the proposed protocol has superior security, less computational cost, and comparable communication cost when compered these parameters with the other competing schemes.

LAAC: Lightweight Lattice-Based Authentication and Access Control Protocol for E-Health Systems in IoT Environments

Daya Sagar Gupta, SK Hafizul Islam, Mohammad S. Obaidat +2 more

Over the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has played a crucial role in designing e-health systems. An IoT-enabled e-health system allows different entities to examine a patient's health condition anywhere and anytime. However, the deployment of e-health systems in an IoT environment faces various security and privacy challenges. The authentication of participating entities, the confidentiality of information transferred through an insecure channel, and access control are essential issues to be resolved. To settle these challenges, we found many authentication protocols for e-health systems based on the discrete logarithm and integer factorization problems. However, quantum attacks expose all these protocols. In this article, we propose a lattice-based authentication and access control (LAAC) protocol for IoT-enabled e-health systems to mitigate the quantum attacks. We prove that LAAC is robust with the hardness assumption of the inhomogeneous small integer solution problem. Moreover, we provide provable security analysis of LAAC. Besides, performance evaluation shows it is reasonable to execute LAAC in an IoT device.

A Novel RLWE-Based Anonymous Mutual Authentication Protocol for Space Information Network

Junyan Guo, Ye Du

Currently, space information network (SIN) has become an increasingly important role in real life. As a large heterogeneous wireless network, SIN can better provide global mobile services to users anytime and anywhere, even in extreme geographic environments. In addition, there is no need to build the communication base-stations every few kilometers on the ground to ensure high service quality, which greatly reduces the construction costs and can be used as an economical communication method in sparsely populated areas. So there is a trend that more and more end users are more likely to get SIN services than traditional terrestrial cellular networks. However, due to the openness and publicity of the satellite wireless channel and the limited resources of the satellite nodes, the privacy and security cannot be perfectly guaranteed and may even be vulnerable to attacks initiated by the adversary such as replay attacks, impersonation attacks, and eavesdropping attacks. To improve the access security of SIN, researchers have proposed a series of authentication protocols based on different cryptographic assumptions. Nevertheless, existing research shows that these protocols cannot meet the requirements of higher and higher security and short authentication delay. In addition, these protocols are mainly based on public key cryptography mechanisms such as DLP and ECDLP, which can be solved by postquantum computers in polynomial time, so these protocols will no longer be secure. To solve the vulnerability of these protocols, in this paper, we propose a new RLWE-based anonymous mutual authentication and key agreement protocol, which guarantees higher security with low computational overhead even in the postquantum era. Detailed security analysis shows that our protocol meets security requirements and is resistant to a variety of known attacks. Besides, combining security comparison and performance analysis, our proposed protocol is more practical than other protocols in SIN.
