Production Efficiency of Ultracold Feshbach Molecules in Bosonic and Fermionic Systems

E. Hodby, Sarah T. Thompson, Cindy A. Regal +5 more

We investigate the production efficiency of ultracold molecules in bosonic 85 Rb and fermionic 40 K when the magnetic field is swept across a Feshbach resonance. For adiabatic sweeps of the magnetic field, the conversion efficiency of each species is solely determined by the phase space density of the atomic cloud, in contrast to a number of theoretical predictions. Our novel model for the adiabatic pairing process, developed from general physical principles, accurately predicts the conversion efficiency for both ultracold gases of bosons and of fermions. In the non-adiabatic regime our measurements of the 85 Rb molecule conversion efficiency follow a Landau Zener model, with a conversion efficiency that is characterized by the density divided by the time derivative of the magnetic field.

Condensate fraction of molecules for a spin mixture of ultracold fermionic atoms

Hongwei Xiong, Shujuan Liu, Min Liu +2 more

The condensate fraction of molecules for ultracold Fermi gases is investigated for the magnetic field below the Feshbach resonant magnetic field. Assuming that there is no loss of particles and energy during the adiabatic magnetic-field sweep, a simple theory is used to interpret the measured condensate fraction in the experiments by JILA group (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 040403 (2004)) and MIT group (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 120403 (2004)). Our theory shows that the condensate fraction of molecules is dependent on the initial condition of the system and especially on the process of the magnetic-field sweep.

Radio-frequency spectroscopy of weakly bound molecules in ultracold Fermi gas

Lianghui Huang, Pengjun Wang, Zhengkun Fu +1 more

We create weakly bound Feshbach molecules in ultracold Fermi gas 40 K by sweeping a magnetic field across a broad Feshbach resonance point 202.2 G with a rate of 20 ms/G and perform the dissociation process using radio-frequency (RF) technology. From RF spectroscopy, we obtain the binding energy of the weakly bound molecules in the vicinity of Feshbach resonance. Our measurement also shows that the number of atoms generated from the dissociation process is different at various magnetic fields with the same RF amplitude, which gives us a deeper understanding of weakly bound Feshbach molecules.
