Dynamics of Reservoir Observables within the Zwanzig Projection Operator Method in the Theory of Open Quantum Systems

Abstract

One of the main methods for describing the dynamics of open quantum systems is the method of quantum master equations. These equations describe the dynamics of the reduced density operator of a system interacting with a reservoir. In this case, averaging is performed over the degrees of freedom of the reservoir, which does not allow one to describe the dynamics of reservoir observables. In this paper we show that applying the Zwanzig projection operator method, which is used in deriving quantum master equations, one can also derive dynamic equations for reservoir observables. As an example, we derive dynamic equations for the average number of quanta (photons, phonons) of a bosonic reservoir in the approximation of its weak coupling to the system in the case of the dipole interaction Hamiltonian.

Master equation for open quantum systems: Zwanzig-Nakajima projection technique and the intrinsic bath dynamics

V. V. Ignatyuk, V. G. Morozov

The non-Markovian master equation for open quantum systems is obtained by generalization of the ordinary Zwanzig-Nakajima (ZN) projection technique. To this end, a coupled chain of equations for the reduced density matrices of the bath $\varrho_{B}(t)$ and the system $\varrho_{S}(t)$ are written down. A formal solution of the equation for $\varrho_{B}(t)$, having been inserted in the equation for the reduced density matrix of the system, in the 2-nd approximation in interaction yields a very specific extra term in the generalized master equation. This term, being nonlinear in $\varrho_{S}(t)$, is related to the intrinsic bath dynamics and vanishes in the Markovian limit. To verify the consistence and robustness of our approach, we applied the generalized ZN projection scheme to a simple dephasing model. It is shown that consideration of the lowest order in interaction is insufficient to describe time evolution of the system coherence adequately. We explain this fact by analyzing the exact and approximate forms of $\varrho_{B}(t)$ and give some hints how to take the dynamic correlations (which originate from the spin-bath coupling) into account.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit in a reservoir: different solutions of non-Markovian master equation

Bang-Fu Ding, Xiao-Yun Wang, Yan-Fang Tang +2 more

We present a non-Markovian master equation for a qubit interacting with a general reservoir, which is derived according to the Nakajima—Zwanzig and the time convolutionless projection operator technique. The non-Markovian solutions and Markovian solution of dynamical decay of a qubit are compared. The results indicate the validity of non-Markovian approach in different coupling regimes and also show that the Markovian master equation may not precisely describe the dynamics of an open quantum system in some situation. The non-Markovian solutions may be effective for many qubits independently interacting with the heated reservoirs.

Non-Markovian dissipative dynamics of two coupled qubits in independent reservoirs: Comparison between exact solutions and master-equation approaches

Elena Ferraro, M. Scala, Rosanna Migliore +1 more

The reduced dynamics of two interacting qubits coupled to two independent bosonic baths is investigated. The one-excitation dynamics is derived and compared with that based on the resolution of appropriate non-Markovian master equations. The Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless projection operator techniques are exploited to provide a description of the non-Markovian features of the dynamics of the two-qubit system. The validity of such approximate methods and their range of validity in correspondence to different choices of the parameters describing the system are brought to light.

Relaxation of interacting open quantum systems

Vladislav Yu. Shishkov, E. S. Andrianov, Александр Александрович Пухов +2 more

Abstract We consider the transition from the description of a closed quantum system consisting of an open quantum system and a reservoir to the description of the open quantum system alone by eliminating the reservoir degrees of freedom by averaging over them. An approach based on the Lindblad master equation for the density matrix is used. A general scheme is developed for deriving the Lindblad superoperator that emerges after averaging the von Neumann equation over the reservoir degrees of freedom. This scheme is illustrated with the cases of radiation of a two-level atom into free space and the dynamics of the transition of a two-level atom from a pure state to a mixed state due to interaction with a dephasing reservoir. Special attention is paid to the open system consisting of several subsystems each of which independently interacts with the reservoir. In the case of noninteracting subsystems, the density matrix is a tensor product of the subsystem density matrices, and the Lindblad superoperator of the system is a sum of Lindblad superoperators of those subsystems. The interaction between the subsystems results not only in the emergence of the corresponding term in the Hamiltonian of the combined system but also in the nonadditivity of the Lindblad superoperators. This is often overlooked in modern literature, possibly leading, as is shown in this methodological note, to serious errors; for example, the second law of thermodynamics could be violated.

On the Assumption of Initial Factorization in the Master Equation for Weakly Coupled Systems II: Solvable Models

Yuasa, K, Facchi, P, Kimura, G +4 more

We analyze some solvable models of a quantum mechanical system in interaction with a reservoir when the initial state is not factorized. We apply Nakajima-Zwanzig's projection method by choosing a reference state of the reservoir endowed with the mixing property. In van Hove's limit, the dynamics is described in terms of a master equation. We observe that Markovianity becomes a valid approximation for timescales that depend both on the form factors of the interaction and on the observables of the reservoir that can be measured.

Decoherence in open quantum systems: influence of the intrinsic bath dynamics

V. V. Ignatyuk, V. G. Morozov

The non-Markovian master equation for open quantum systems is obtained by generalization of the standard Zwanzig-Nakajima (ZN) projection technique. To this end, a coupled chain of equations is written for the reduced density matrices of the bath ϱB(t) and of the system ϱS(t). A formal solution of the equation for ϱB(t) in the 2nd approximation in interaction yields a specific extra term related to the intrinsic bath dynamics. This term is nonlinear in the reduced density matrix ϱS(t), and vanishes in the Markovian limit. To verify the consistence and robustness of our approach, we apply the generalized ZN projection scheme to a simple dephasing model. We study the obtained kinetic equation both in the Markovian approximation and beyond it (for the term related to the intrinsic bath dynamics) and compare the results with the exact ones.
