Decoherence in open quantum systems: influence of the intrinsic bath dynamics

Abstract

The non-Markovian master equation for open quantum systems is obtained by generalization of the standard Zwanzig-Nakajima (ZN) projection technique. To this end, a coupled chain of equations is written for the reduced density matrices of the bath ϱB(t) and of the system ϱS(t). A formal solution of the equation for ϱB(t) in the 2nd approximation in interaction yields a specific extra term related to the intrinsic bath dynamics. This term is nonlinear in the reduced density matrix ϱS(t), and vanishes in the Markovian limit. To verify the consistence and robustness of our approach, we apply the generalized ZN projection scheme to a simple dephasing model. We study the obtained kinetic equation both in the Markovian approximation and beyond it (for the term related to the intrinsic bath dynamics) and compare the results with the exact ones.

Master equation for open quantum systems: Zwanzig-Nakajima projection technique and the intrinsic bath dynamics

V. V. Ignatyuk, V. G. Morozov

The non-Markovian master equation for open quantum systems is obtained by generalization of the ordinary Zwanzig-Nakajima (ZN) projection technique. To this end, a coupled chain of equations for the reduced density matrices of the bath $\varrho_{B}(t)$ and the system $\varrho_{S}(t)$ are written down. A formal solution of the equation for $\varrho_{B}(t)$, having been inserted in the equation for the reduced density matrix of the system, in the 2-nd approximation in interaction yields a very specific extra term in the generalized master equation. This term, being nonlinear in $\varrho_{S}(t)$, is related to the intrinsic bath dynamics and vanishes in the Markovian limit. To verify the consistence and robustness of our approach, we applied the generalized ZN projection scheme to a simple dephasing model. It is shown that consideration of the lowest order in interaction is insufficient to describe time evolution of the system coherence adequately. We explain this fact by analyzing the exact and approximate forms of $\varrho_{B}(t)$ and give some hints how to take the dynamic correlations (which originate from the spin-bath coupling) into account.

Non-Markovian dissipative dynamics of two coupled qubits in independent reservoirs: Comparison between exact solutions and master-equation approaches

Elena Ferraro, M. Scala, Rosanna Migliore +1 more

The reduced dynamics of two interacting qubits coupled to two independent bosonic baths is investigated. The one-excitation dynamics is derived and compared with that based on the resolution of appropriate non-Markovian master equations. The Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless projection operator techniques are exploited to provide a description of the non-Markovian features of the dynamics of the two-qubit system. The validity of such approximate methods and their range of validity in correspondence to different choices of the parameters describing the system are brought to light.

Decoherence and quantum-classical master equation dynamics

Robbie Grunwald, Raymond Kapral

The conditions under which quantum-classical Liouville dynamics may be reduced to a master equation are investigated. Systems that can be partitioned into a quantum-classical subsystem interacting with a classical bath are considered. Starting with an exact non-Markovian equation for the diagonal elements of the density matrix, an evolution equation for the subsystem density matrix is derived. One contribution to this equation contains the bath average of a memory kernel that accounts for all coherences in the system. It is shown to be a rapidly decaying function, motivating a Markovian approximation on this term in the evolution equation. The resulting subsystem density matrix equation is still non-Markovian due to the fact that bath degrees of freedom have been projected out of the dynamics. Provided the computation of nonequilibrium average values or correlation functions is considered, the non-Markovian character of this equation can be removed by lifting the equation into the full phase space of the system. This leads to a trajectory description of the dynamics where each fictitious trajectory accounts for decoherence due to the bath degrees of freedom. The results are illustrated by computations of the rate constant of a model nonadiabatic chemical reaction.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit in a reservoir: different solutions of non-Markovian master equation

Bang-Fu Ding, Xiao-Yun Wang, Yan-Fang Tang +2 more

We present a non-Markovian master equation for a qubit interacting with a general reservoir, which is derived according to the Nakajima—Zwanzig and the time convolutionless projection operator technique. The non-Markovian solutions and Markovian solution of dynamical decay of a qubit are compared. The results indicate the validity of non-Markovian approach in different coupling regimes and also show that the Markovian master equation may not precisely describe the dynamics of an open quantum system in some situation. The non-Markovian solutions may be effective for many qubits independently interacting with the heated reservoirs.

Dynamic Correlations in Open Quantum Systems: The Dephasing Model

V. V. Ignatyuk

We study the dynamical correlations in open quantum systems on an example of an exactly solvable dephasing model. The system of non-Markovian kinetic equations for the generalized coherence and quasi-temperature is derived up to the 2-nd order in the coupling constant using the generalized quantum master equation [20]. Numerical and analytical solutions of the kinetic equations are obtained. The analytical result shows a redistribution of the real and imaginary parts of the coherence as compared to the exact one. We give a physical interpretation to the quasi-temperature, relating it to the nonequilibrium kinetic energy of the environment.

Correlated projection operator approach to non-Markovian dynamics in spin baths

Jan Fischer, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

The dynamics of an open quantum system is usually studied by performing a weak-coupling and weak-correlation expansion in the system-bath interaction. For systems exhibiting strong couplings and highly non-Markovian behavior this approach is not justified. We apply a recently proposed correlated projection superoperator technique to the model of a central spin coupled to a spin bath via full Heisenberg interaction. Analytical solutions to both the Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless master equation are determined and compared with the results of the exact solution. The correlated projection operator technique significantly improves the standard methods and can be applied to many physical problems such as the hyperfine interaction in a quantum dot.
