Abstract

The intensity-amplitude correlation functions for a driven cavity QED system with two non-identical atoms are investigated in this paper. With the support of conditional homodyne detection, one can detect the time-dependent intensity-amplitude correlation functions experimentally. We find time-asymmetry in this correlation when the driving field is tuned to be resonant with the two-photon excitation state, which brings non-Gaussian fluctuations. The physical origin of these phenomena is the distinction of the third-order moment based on complete-collapse and partial-collapse, which corresponds to the measuring sequence of the intensity and amplitude. Finally, we also examined the nonclassical features of the system, which always exhibits photon bunching. The squeezing occurs in the region of weak driving and disappears with the increase of driving strength. Hence, a new classical inequality based on the technique of homodyne cross-correlation measurement is introduced to determine the nonclassicality of the non-Gaussian system in the region of unsqueezing.

Nonclassical intensity correlations in cavity QED

Joe Leach, Perry R. Rice

We consider two systems in the weak driving field limit. The first is an optical parametric oscillator, the transmitted field of which is highly bunched. We discuss a conditioned measurement of the second order intensity correlation function that yields antibunching. The second system we consider is a single two level atom inside a weakly driven cavity. Here we consider cross correlations between the transmitted and fluorescent fields. A strong asymmetry in delay time has been noted by Denisov et. al., here we find strong violations of a classical inequality for the cross correlation.

Time-dependent electric field fluctuations at the subphoton level

G. T. Foster, Wade P. Smith, Joseph E. Reiner +1 more

We report studies of a third-order correlation function that records the conditional time evolution of the field of a fraction of a photon. We present results in the strong-coupling regime of cavity QED, where the detection of a photon from the cavity prepares a state with a well-defined phase that evolves back to equilibrium via a damped vacuum Rabi oscillation. We perform a homodyne measurement conditioned on the photon detection to observe the regression of the field amplitude. The measured field-photon correlation is nonclassical and can be used to determine the spectrum of squeezing in an efficiency independent way.

Intensity correlations in cavity QED

G. T. Foster, S. L. Mielke, Luis A. Orozco

The second-order intensity correlation function of light transmitted out of a cavity QED system exhibits the nonclassical features and dynamics of the atom-field interaction. We present measurements of the intensity correlation to examine the size of the nonclassical features and the dependence on driving intensity, detuning, and the strength of the atom-field coupling. We use a model that takes into account experimental conditions to achieve a quantitative agreement with the observations.

Nonclassical Intensity Correlations in Cavity QED

S. L. Mielke, G. T. Foster, Luis A. Orozco

We report nonclassical correlations in the light transmitted by a collection of two-level atoms strongly coupled to a single mode of the electromagnetic field of a driven optical cavity. This cavity QED system can produce bunched light that violates the Schwarz inequality due to the state preparation of the system from the detection of a photon. The correlation function shows oscillations at a frequency that decreases with increasing intensity.

Cavity QED System with Optical Lattice: Photon Statistics and Conditioned Homodyne Detection

Mambwe Mumba, Dyan L. Jones, Perry R. Rice

We investigate the quantum fluctuations of a single atom in a weakly driven cavity, with an intracavity optical lattice. The weak driving field is on resonance with the atoms and the cavity, and is the second-harmonic of the lattice beam. In this special case we can find eigenstates of the Hamiltonian in terms of Mathieu functions. We present analytic results for the second order intensity correlation function $g^{(2)}(τ)$ and the intensity-field correlation function $h_θ(τ)$, for both transmitted and fluorescent light for weak driving fields. We find that the coupling of the center of mass motion to the intracavity field mode can be deleterious to nonclassical effects in photon statistics; less so for the intensity-field correlations, and compare the use of trapped atoms in a cavity to atomic beams.

Conditioned homodyne detection at the single-photon level: Intensity-field correlations for a two-level atom in an optical parametric oscillator

C. Elliot Strimbu, Joseph Leach, Perry R. Rice

We consider intensity-field correlation functions for a two-level atom in a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which would result from a conditioned homodyne measurement. Analytic results are obtained in the limit of weak driving fields using quantum trajectory methods for both the transmitted and fluorescent fields. This system is unique in that after detection of a photon, it is known that one excitation is in the system, in either the atom or cavity mode. We find large violations of inequalities satisfied by classical fields, for both transmitted and fluorescent fields. This is in contrast to the usual cavity QED system of an atom in a driven cavity where we do not find nonclassical behavior in the intensity-field correlation function in fluorescence. This is understood in terms of a relationship between the intensity-field correlation function and the second-order intensity correlation function, as well as the different amount of field-atom entanglement in the two systems. We show that for weak-field cavity QED one must have photon bunching to have nonclassical behavior in the intensity-field correlation function. We compare our results to those of an ordinary OPO. Finally, we also consider cross correlations, where we examine the transmitted (fluorescent) field conditioned by detection of a fluorescent (transmitted) photon.
