Kinetic Correlation Functionals from the Entropic Regularization of the Strictly Correlated Electrons Problem

Abstract

In this work, we study the entropic regularization of the strictly correlated electrons formalism, discussing the implications for density functional theory and establishing a link with earlier works on quantum kinetic energy and classical entropy. We carry out a very preliminary investigation (using simplified models) on the use of the solution of the entropic regularized problem to build approximations for the kinetic correlation functional at large coupling strengths. We also analyze lower and upper bounds to the Hohenberg-Kohn functional using the entropic regularized strictly correlated electrons problem.

Kinetic correlation functionals from the entropic regularisation of the strictly-correlated electrons problem

Augusto Gerolin, Juri Grossi, Paola Gori‐Giorgi

We investigate whether the entropic regularisation of the strictly-correlated-electrons problem can be used to build approximations for the kinetic correlation energy functional at large coupling strengths and, more generally, to gain new insight in the problem of describing and understanding strong correlation within Density Functional Theory.

Density-Functional Theory for Strongly Interacting Electrons

Paola Gori‐Giorgi, Michael Seidl, Giovanni Vignale

We present an alternative to the Kohn-Sham formulation of density-functional theory for the ground-state properties of strongly interacting electronic systems. The idea is to start from the limit of zero kinetic energy and systematically expand the universal energy functional of the density in powers of a "coupling constant" that controls the magnitude of the kinetic energy. The problem of minimizing the energy is reduced to the solution of a strictly correlated electron problem in the presence of an effective potential, which in our theory plays the same role as the Kohn-Sham potential plays in the traditional formulation. We discuss several schemes for approximating the energy functional, and report preliminary results for low-density quantum dots.

Entropic Density Functional Theory

Ahmad Yousefi, Ariel Caticha

A formulation of density functional theory (DFT) is constructed as an application of the method of maximum entropy for an inhomogeneous fluid in thermal equilibrium. The use of entropy as a systematic method to generate optimal approximations is extended from the classical to the quantum domain. This process introduces a family of trial density operators that are parameterized by the particle density. The optimal density operator is that which maximizes the quantum entropy relative to the exact canonical density operator. This approach reproduces the variational principle of DFT and allows a simple proof of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem at finite temperature. Finally, as an illustration, we discuss the Kohn-Sham approximation scheme at finite temperature.

Generalized density functional theories using the k-electron densities: Development of kinetic energy functionals

Paul W. Ayers

Several explicit formulas for the kinetic energy of a many-electron system as a functional of the k-electron density are derived, with emphasis on the electron pair density. The emphasis is on general techniques for deriving approximate kinetic energy functionals and features generalized Weisacker bounds and methods using density-matrix reconstruction. Adapting results from statistical mechanics, a hierarchy of equations is derived that links electron pairs, triplets, quadruplets, etc.; this may be used to derive more accurate approximations. Several methods for defining the exact kinetic energy functional are presented, including the generalizations of the Levy and Lieb formulations of density-functional theory. Together with N-representability constraints on the k-density, this paper provides the basis for “generalized density functional theories” based on the electron pair density. There are also implications for conventional density-functional theory, notably regarding the development of more accurate density functionals for the kinetic energy.

Coupling-constant expression and exact relations for the kinetic-energy functional in pair-density-functional theory

Katsuhiko Higuchi, Masahiko Higuchi

We derive the coupling-constant expression for the kinetic energy (KE) functional of the pair-density-functional theory. Such the expression can be effectively used in developing the approximate KE functional. Indeed, on the basis of this expression, we present an approximate form of the KE functional by means of the perturbation theory. Furthermore, as the first step of an alternative way of obtaining the approximate KE functional, we derive several relations and bounds for the KE functional by investigating how the KE functional changes with the nonuniform scaling, rotation, and translation of electron coordinates. Such relations and bounds can be utilized as restrictive conditions on the approximate form. Thus, the coupling-constant expression, relations and bounds obtained here provide useful tools for devising various types of the approximate KE functional that is indispensable for advancing the pair-density-functional theory.

Strong Correlation in Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory

Francesc Malet, Paola Gori‐Giorgi

We use the exact strong-interaction limit of the Hohenberg-Kohn energy density functional to approximate the exchange-correlation energy of the restricted Kohn-Sham scheme. Our approximation corresponds to a highly nonlocal density functional whose functional derivative can be easily constructed, thus transforming exactly, in a physically transparent way, an important part of the electron-electron interaction into an effective local one-body potential. We test our approach on quasi-one-dimensional systems, showing that it captures essential features of strong correlation that restricted Kohn-Sham calculations using the currently available approximations cannot describe.
