Strong Correlation in Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory

Abstract

We use the exact strong-interaction limit of the Hohenberg-Kohn energy density functional to approximate the exchange-correlation energy of the restricted Kohn-Sham scheme. Our approximation corresponds to a highly nonlocal density functional whose functional derivative can be easily constructed, thus transforming exactly, in a physically transparent way, an important part of the electron-electron interaction into an effective local one-body potential. We test our approach on quasi-one-dimensional systems, showing that it captures essential features of strong correlation that restricted Kohn-Sham calculations using the currently available approximations cannot describe.

Derivative Discontinuity in the Strong-Interaction Limit of Density-Functional Theory

André Mirtschink, Michael Seidl, Paola Gori‐Giorgi

We generalize the exact strong-interaction limit of the exchange-correlation energy of Kohn-Sham density functional theory to open systems with fluctuating particle numbers. When used in the self-consistent Kohn-Sham procedure on strongly interacting systems, this functional yields exact features crucial for important applications such as quantum transport. In particular, the steplike structure of the highest-occupied Kohn-Sham eigenvalue is very well captured, with accurate quantitative agreement with exact many-body chemical potentials. While it can be shown that a sharp derivative discontinuity is present only in the infinitely strongly correlated limit, at finite correlation regimes we observe a slightly smoothened discontinuity, with qualitative and quantitative features that improve with increasing correlation. From the fundamental point of view, our results obtain the derivative discontinuity without making the assumptions used in its standard derivation, offering independent support for its existence.

Exact exchange-correlation potential of effectively interacting Kohn-Sham systems

Shunsuke A. Sato, Ángel Rubio

Aiming to combine density functional theory (DFT) and wave-function theory, we study a mapping from the many-body interacting system to an effectively interacting Kohn-Sham system instead of a noninteracting Kohn-Sham system. Because a ground state of effectively interacting systems requires having a solution for the correlated many-body wave functions, this provides a natural framework to many-body wave-function theories such as the configuration interaction and the coupled-cluster method in the formal theoretical framework of DFT. Employing simple one-dimensional two-electron systems---namely, the one-dimensional helium atom, the hydrogen molecule, and the heteronuclear diatomic molecule---we investigate properties of many-body wave functions and exact exchange-correlation potentials of effectively interacting Kohn-Sham systems. As a result, we find that the asymptotic behavior of the exact exchange-correlation potential can be controlled by optimizing that of the effective interaction. Furthermore, the typical features of the exact noninteracting Kohn-Sham system, namely, a spiky feature and a step feature in the exchange-correlation potential for the molecular dissociation limit, can be suppressed by a proper choice of the effective interaction. These findings open a possibility to construct numerically robust and efficient exchange-correlation potentials and functionals based on the effectively interacting Kohn-Sham scheme.

Tests of the locality of exact Kohn-Sham exchange potentials

ROBERT K. NESBET, Renato Colle

It is commonly assumed that exact Kohn-Sham theory implies a local exchange-correlation potential for ground states. Here we show that this is not true for the exchange potential in a Hartree-Fock model of density-functional theory, although Hohenberg-Kohn theorems can be proved for this model. It may not be possible to express exact Kohn-Sham equations in general in terms of density-functional derivatives that are equivalent to local potential functions.

Accurate real-time evolution of electron densities and ground-state properties from generalized Kohn-Sham theory

M. J. P. Hodgson, Jack Wetherell

The exact static and time-dependent Kohn-Sham (KS) exchange-correlation potential is extremely challenging to approximate as it is a local multiplicative potential that depends on the electron density everywhere in the system. The KS approach can be generalized by allowing part of the potential to be spatially nonlocal. We take this nonlocal part to be that of unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory. The additional local correlation potential in principle ensures that the single-particle density exactly equals the many-body density. In our case, the local correlation potential is predominantly nearsighted in its dependence on the density and hence an (adiabatic) local-density approximation to this potential yields accurate ground-state properties and real-time densities for one-dimensional test systems.

Expressions for the Exchange Correlation Potential and Exchange Correlation Functional of Kohn--Sham Density Functional Theory

James P. Finley

The State--Specific Kohn--Sham Density Functional Theory [arXiv:physics/0506037] is used to derive the Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential $\vxc$ and exchange-correlation energy $\Eco$ as explicit functionals of $v_s$ and $ϕ_1$, where $v_s$ is the local, one-body potential from the Kohn--Sham equations, and $ϕ_1$ is the spinless one-particle density matrix from the Kohn--Sham noninteracting state, say $|ϕ_1\ran$. In other words, $|ϕ_1\ran$ is the ground state eigenfunction of the noninteracting Schrödinger equation with the one-body potential $v_s$. For simplicity, we only consider noninteracting states that are closed-shell states and interacting states that are nondegenerate, singlet ground-states.

A Rigorous Extension of the Kohn-Sham Equation for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

Koichi Kusakabe

By introducing a set of auxiliary equations representing a many-body system, we have derived an extension of the Kohn-Sham scheme for the density functional theory. These equations consist of a Kohn-Sham-type equation determining single-particle orbitals and an eigen-value equation for an effective many-body problem. A variational method similar to the Kohn-Sham technique was utilized to derive effective interactions as well as effective potentials without artificial substitution of a Hubbard-type interaction and a mean-field correction in the energy functional. The second equation is described by an effective many-body Hamiltonian with both 2-body interactions and mean-field terms. Rigorous formulation of the extended Kohn-Sham equation is also given in accordance with the Hadjisavvas-Theophilou formulation. Our formulation can be interpreted as a way to define models of the strongly correlated electron systems, e.g. the Hubbard model
