Abstract

Abstract The one-dimensional Ising model with various boundary conditions is considered. Exact expressions for the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the model using different kinds of boundary conditions [Dirichlet (D), Neumann (N), and a combination of Neumann–Dirichlet (ND)] are presented in the absence (presence) of a magnetic field. The finite-size scaling functions for internal energy, heat capacity, entropy, magnetisation, and magnetic susceptibility are derived and analysed as function of the temperature and the field. We show that the properties of the one-dimensional Ising model is affected by the finite size of the system and the imposed boundary conditions. The thermodynamic limit in which the finite-size functions approach the bulk case is also discussed.

On the critical behavior of the spin-s Ising model

Magdy E. Amin, M. Mubark, Y. Amin

The spin-s one dimensional Ising model is studied analytically within the framework of transfer matrix method. Exact results for some thermodynamical properties such as the internal energy, the entropy, the magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility are obtained for general spin-s in the absence (presence) of a magnetic field. The critical behavior of the thermodynamical properties are analysed for some values of spin-s (1/2, 1 and 3/2) at different temperature and field. The asymptotic behavior of these properties are investigated especially close to the critical temperature T → 0 and when T → ∞.

Probability distribution of magnetization in the one-dimensional Ising model: effects of boundary conditions

Tibor Antal A, Droz, Michel, Zoltàn Ràcz

Finite-size scaling functions are investigated both for the mean-square magnetization fluctuations and for the probability distribution of the magnetization in the one-dimensional Ising model. The scaling functions are evaluated in the limit of the temperature going to zero (T → 0), the size of the system going to infinity (N → ∞) while N[1 − tanh(J/kBT)] is kept finite (J being the nearest neighbour coupling). Exact calculations using various boundary conditions (periodic, antiperiodic, free, block) demonstrate explicitly how the scaling functions depend on the boundary conditions. We also show that the block (small part of a large system) magnetization distribution results are identical to those obtained for free boundary conditions.

Investigation of size effects on the physical properties of one-dimensional Ising models in nanosystems

Farid Taherkhani, Ebrahim Daryaei, Gholamabbas Parsafar +1 more

Ising models in nanosystems are studied in the presence of a magnetic field. For a one-dimensional (1-D) array of spins interacting via nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour interactions we calculate the heat capacity, the surface energy, the finite-size free energy and the bulk free energy per site. The heat capacity versus temperature exhibits a common wide peak for systems of any size. A small peak also appears at lower temperatures for small arrays when the ratio of magnetic field spin interaction energy over the nearest-neighbour spin–spin interaction energy, f, is within . The peak becomes smaller for longer array and eventually vanishes for long arrays, disappearing when the number of spins, N, is greater than 25 when only nearest-neighbour interactions are taken into account, and more than 14 when next-nearest-neighbour interactions are included as well. Ising models in which the nearest-neighbour interactions are ferromagnetic, while the next-nearest-neighbour interactions are either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, are compared, and it is found that the reduced free energy in the former case exhibits a larger deviation from the bulk value.

Investigation of Magnetic Properties of Spin 5/2 Ising Chain by Using Transfer Matrix Method

Mehmet Gökhan Şensoy, Mehmet Batı

A magnetic property of the one dimensional spin 5/2 Ising model under the magnetic field has been investigated by means of transfer matrix method. Thermodynamic response functions are also obtained for varying values of scaling temperature and scaling magnetic field. Entropy and heat capacity of the system were calculated by benefiting from the temperature dependencies of Helmholtz free energy. Our simulation results demonstrate that as the strength of the magnetic field is increased, heat capacity tend to shift to the relatively higher temperature regions, and these findings are consistent with previous results for the low spin values in one dimensional Ising systems.

Thermodynamics Property of Magnetic Materials in a Ferromagnetic System using the Ising Model

Akaninyene Daniel Antia, Cyril C. Umoren

There is hardly any branch of physics one can approach successfully without resorting to quantum statistical mechanics. It has been proven that the quantum mechanical description of a system gives accurate results. To use quantum statistical mechanics, the system are treated at their microscopic level. Most systems consist of many particles and in order o deal with such large numbers, one has to resort to statistical method related to the partition function of statistical mechanics. In this study, we haves used the partition function which is a statistical parameter to explore the thermodynamic properties such as Helmoltz free energy, Entropy, internal energy and heat capacity of a magnetic materials in a ferromagnetic system using the first and second dimensional Ising model. The results show that in one-dimensional model, phase transition does not occur at finite temperature but susceptibility of a system can be measured from the fluctuations in the magnetization in the second dimensional Ising model.
